I can tell and write the time from an analogue clock, including using Roman numerals from I to XII, and from a 12-hour digital clock

What does this objective mean?

This objective requires children to be able to tell the time from an analogue clock (including those with Roman numerals) and from a 12-hour digital clock. Children should be able to write the time with the correct format and spelling.

How might it be assessed in the 7+?

Children may be asked to draw hands on a clock to show a time. For example:

Draw hands on the clock to show quarter to eleven.

Children may be asked to read the time from an analogue or digital clock. For example:

Write the time shown on the clock face in words:

b) Write what time it is in words:

7:15

9:30

Children may be required to convert from analogue to digital time. E.g:

Write the time shown on the clock face in digital time:

_______ : ______

How do I teach this to my child?

Visnos offers a free interactive clock, which is a fantastic resource for teaching children to tell the time:

https://www.visnos.com/demos/clock

You can use this to practise telling the analogue and digital time.

In order to tell the time using Roman numerals, children will need to learn the numbers 1 – 12:

1 – I
2 – II
3 – III
4 – IV
5 – V
6 – VI
7 – VII
8 – VIII
9 – IX
10 – X
11 – XI
12 – XII

How can we practise this?

Idea: regular practise

You can incorporate telling the time into your daily routine; at regular intervals during the day ask your child to tell you what the time is. Ask them to let you know when it is time to leave for school for example, or time to have dinner.

Idea: dominoes

Practise reading Roman numerals using the dominoes (see resources). The game can be played together (divide the dominoes between you and take it in turns) or individually (ask your child to link them all together, perhaps within a certain time limit).
