City of London School for Girls entrance guide

Founded in 1894, City of London School for Girls educates girls aged between 11 and 18. Many students come from the recently established City Junior School (boys will attend City of London School) but there are places at 11+ and 16+ available when the year groups expand. City of London School for Girls is located in central London, and girls travel from many different London postcodes and a few from outside the M25 (a useful checker is available on the school website to see how many girls come from a particular postcode). Overseas students are accepted if they have a London-based guardian, as the school has no boarding provision. Below you can find our guide to City of London School for Girls and a list of our tutors who have helped families seeking admission there.

11+ Entry to City of London School for Girls

11+ entry to City of London School for Girls is a two-stage process. Following registration, girls will be invited to the first assessment at the school which takes place in the Autumn Term of Year 6. This is run by CEM (Centre for Evaluation and Monitoring), an online testing provider based in Cambridge and consists of Verbal, Non-Verbal and Maths sections. The total test time is an hour, and familiarization materials are linked on the school website. At this stage City of London School for Girls will request a reference from the child’s current school. Girls who are provided with a positive reference and who are successful in the first stage of assessments will be invited to the second stage.

The second stage of 11+ entry to City of London School for Girls consists of a second assessment day at the school, which takes place in the Spring Term of Year 6. Here, girls will sit papers in English (comprehension and creative writing) and Maths (basic calculations and problem-solving) and will also attend a taster lesson. Girls who reach the second stage are also invited to an interview later that term.

Offers are sent out during the Spring Term, and must be accepted by the end of that term.

16+ Entry to City of London School for Girls

Following registration, girls are assessed internally for 16+ entry to City of London School for Girls. The assessment day has two stages. Firstly, girls will undertake a multiple choice critical thinking paper. They then sit further papers which are targeted towards their A Level choices. There is an argumentative essay paper for those choosing essay-based subjects such as English and History. For those doing a Maths or Science subject, there is a Maths paper, and for Languages, a Languages paper. All papers are 45 minutes. This means girls will sit a maximum of four papers on the day. Following the assessment day, successful candidates will be invited back to City of London School for Girls for short interviews with teaching staff from their proposed A Level subject areas. Offers of places are sent out shortly after the interview day, and are conditional on GCSE grades.

We could not have asked for a better fit for our son. Emily made him comfortable from the start and he actually enjoyed the tutoring. He is now thriving and at his new school and this is part due to the dialogue between her and his teacher. Emily is really approachable and flexible. Our son was prepared and not anxious for his 11+ exams and that owes significant debt to Emily
Abigail is great with our daughter, making the lessons engaging and helping her to understand the methods behind the answer rather than rote learning. She is able to help explain things in different ways if our daughter isn't initially able to grasp the concept.
Helen is simply an amazing tutor. She is exceptional at explaining maths and english to our son, especially when he needs a bit of extra support in specific areas. She is also extremely organised, structuring his learning around his own needs, as well as highly communicative with us as parents so that we are all on the same page. The cherry on the cake is that she is also warm, friendly, and smiley. Our son always enjoys his sessions with her, as they're joyful but have also really helped him build his skills and confidence.
Alex was great at helping our daughter feel confident before and during the 11+ by working on her less strong areas. She was also excellent at supporting the interview prep making sure she had tools to deal with any questions that came up rather than scripting answers. She was notably more confident after speaking to Alex.
Jacqueline is a fabulous tutor! She is excellent at engaging my somewhat head strong daughter and has not only picked up on her strengths, but is encouraging her to build on them which is increasing her confidence. Jacqueline’s knowledge is second to none, but what makes her wonderful has been her ability to get to know my daughter, understand her way of thinking and adapt a teaching style that brings out her best work. I trust Jacqueline 100% and no longer sit in on my daughters sessions. I leave them to it as I know Jacqueline has the experience and level of expectation that is needed to help my daughter reach her full potential.
