James studied at the University of Liverpool where he received a 1st class degree in English. Subsequently, he cycled 15,000 miles around the world, raising £10,000 for Breakthrough Breast Cancer in the process. This made clear the power of education on one's life - his first step into teaching was as a teaching assistant in an outstanding school, where he learnt the art of facilitating progress on a 1:1 level. After this, he completed the rigorous Teach First programme as an English teacher in a challenging secondary school in London.
It is his primary aim to give pupils the independence to drive their own learning; pupils must know independent studying techniques so that progress can continue outside of our tutorials. In line with this, he strongly believes that meticulous planning is important for success. This tutor will design short, medium and long-term schemes of work, making it transparent where pupils are in the tuition journey, and where they are heading. Through connecting with each pupil as an individual, he aims to facilitate a growth of independence, confidence and ultimately success in pupils' academic journeys.
Outside of academic tuition, James leads travel and adventure expeditions for children and adults around the world.
James qualified to teach English in 2017, and holds a PGCE from University of London (Institute of Education).

James is a colleague at the school where I work and fellow Teach First Participant. He is an outstanding English teacher who's planning and teaching is often heralded as being some of the best in the school. His rigour and attention to detail, as well as the relationship he develops with his pupils make him an outstanding educator.
