David - German David – 1849

David's biography:

David has been teaching German and English as foreign languages in educational settings around the world since 2004. He studied at the University of Bamberg in Germany, where he completed his first state exam (BA Hons equivalent) in English/EFL, Geography and Educational Science, and the USA, where he did his master’s degree in German with a concentration in second language acquisition and language pedagogy at the University of South Carolina.

David has gained expert knowledge in the field of language learning and teaching. He co-presented two research projects at the SCFLTA-conference in South Carolina in 2005 and 2006. In his master’s thesis, he investigated the most effective ways to teach grammar in a foreign language and carried out his own research study.

David’s teaching has always been informed by the latest research in language learning and teaching as he sees this as the best way to provide instruction of the highest quality to his students and to offer them current evidence-based solutions. This enables David to support his students and tutees to optimise their language learning process, to progress quickly and to achieve their goals.

David started teaching German at the University of South Carolina and later became a lecturer for English Linguistics, Second Language Acquisition and Applied Linguistics at the University of Bamberg. After having taught in Brazil for a year, he began to work at a prestigious independent secondary school in Germany where he became Head of the Bilingual Department, setting up a unique bilingual program. In his teaching post as a German and EAL teacher at Whitgift School, he taught KS3, IB (Standard and Higher Level) and Pre-U German. He also tutored Pre-U German and IB German students in one-to-one sessions for their final exams and his support and guidance enabled them to achieve their target grades.

David follows a learner-centred and content-driven approach to teaching, which means that he individualises and personalises his resources for each student considering their interests and learning styles and focuses on teaching them the skills that are necessary to achieve great results in their exams. Where necessary he challenges his students and tutees so that they can achieve their best. He uses a range of media to enrich his lessons with authentic material.

David has always received outstanding feedback from his students and tutees and was praised for his inspiring lessons and his passion for teaching languages, his friendly personality, his ability to connect with them on a professional yet personal level and his skill to make learning fun and enjoyable.

David considers his students emotional and social well-being a priority, and in the course of David’s professional development, he has continued to study the areas of psychology and pedagogy. He has completed the 5-course specialisation, the ‘Foundations of Positive Psychology’, offered by the University of Pennsylvania. Integrating this knowledge in his teaching has given David the ability to help his students and tutees to become more confident, more resilient, and more optimistic and to persevere when faced with difficulties.
