Catherine has a great deal of teaching experience. After teaching English voluntarily at a small village school in Zambia, Africa, Catherine started her teaching career in the UK, teaching Key Stage 3 and GCSE English and Drama at a Comprehensive School in North Manchester. She trained under the renowned Teach First Training Scheme and received an ´Outstanding´ reward for her teaching practice. She continued to grow and develop and took a role teaching in Muscat International School in Oman. She became Head of Arts and taught IGCSE and A-Level Drama. Wanting to explore the International Baccalaureate Curriculum further she then took a role teaching Middle Years program and IB Diploma Language A/ Drama and Theatre Arts. She spent five years at Saint Dominic´s International School in Portugal and has recently departed the school to focus on her own writing in the hope to publish a novel.
Catherine holds a CELTA (Certificate in English Language Tutoring) Certificate and has been fortunate enough to tutor a range of students, from beginner English to MYP English. She can develop relationships with students easily and finds that the focused one to one method of teaching hugely benefits the students. She starts with assessing each student and developing a key area that needs to be focused on in order for the student to succeed in examinations or end of year exams. Depending on the students age and ability, she likes to practice essay writing and strengthen vocabulary.
Currently, Catherine is writing a novel and creating her Ceramics line. She lives in Portugal and stays in close contact with the IB through moderating MYP Drama. Catherine studied a BA Hons Degree in Drama with English (2.1) and Master´s Degree in Education (Merit) at the University of Manchester. Her hobbies include making ceramics, writing, reading and coffee´s out. She lives with her son and enjoys visiting art galleries and attending music concerts.
IB Experience
Catherine has taught the International Baccalaureate (IB) Curriculum for five years. She has enjoyed teaching the connected nature of the IB and focuses students on their global understanding as well as subject skills. Catherine assists students to connect their knowledge from one subject to another and show their broad wealth of knowledge. She helps students to see how studying a novel in English can help them to understand their studies in History or Maths. Although students need to use their writing, reading and listening skills, in the IB they have to study a wider range of subjects and connect their learning in a deeper way to receive the highest levels. It is this global awareness that will set the students apart from others. In MYP English, they must not only understand textual references but body language and intonation in film. I use exemplar work to help students to see how they can improve their own work.
