Anna's biography

With over 20 years teaching students across the secondary age range, Anna has many years successful experience teaching IB, A-Level, GCSE and IGCSE History, Economics and TOK both within the U.K. and overseas. Her schools range from state schools in London, Birmingham and Suffolk, to independent international schools in Germany. The main subject areas taught, particularly at GCSE and above are modern world history; including but not exclusive to Germany, Cold War, World War One and The Inter War Years and 20th Century Domestic USA, China and Japan.

In addition to her full-time teaching, Anna has privately tutored many students. She has developed a tutoring style based on open dialogue and relevance to create flexible individualized learning programmes using a range of learning techniques to suit the tutee. Regular constructive feedback from and to the tutee is essential to create a comfortable, honest and realistic learning environment.

Anna has just moved to Taiwan with her family, where she remains a private tutor and Teacher coach. She continues to be an IB History Examiner and IA moderator, as well as an Edexcel History GCSE Examiner, providing useful and applicable examination techniques to pass on to her own students.

Until recently she was living and working in Bremen, Germany from 2012 - 2021, teaching History up to IB, TOK, and Economics at IGCSE. Until summer 2016 she was the International Middle Years Curriculum Co-ordinator, a role she thoroughly enjoyed due to its holistic nature in supporting the social, emotional and academic progress of young people through project learning and presentations. Further to this, she is an IB History Examiner and IA moderator, as well as an Edexcel History GCSE Examiner, providing useful and applicable examination techniques to pass on to her own students.

As a mother of three, quality time with family is central to Anna, however this is often combined with charitable work, most recently with supporting local refugees and those in Calais and supervising the Duke of Edinburgh Award. She leads an active life including being a kayaking instructor, as well camping road trips, with the additional historical visits included.

IB Experience

Anna has a proven track-record teaching History in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme since 2006, she is both an experienced IB Examiner and Internal Assessment Moderator.

Raising her most recent schools world average point score in History since arriving, further exemplifies a thorough awareness of the necessary skills, such as analytical and critical thinking, required to succeed within the subject. She has responsibility for teaching History at both Standard and Higher Level, preparing students for their Internal Assessments, Paper 1, Paper 2 and Paper 3 with a particular focus on Modern History. Since 2015 Anna has been an examiner for the IB, with particular focus on Paper 2.

Anna was also successfully teaching Theory of Knowledge for a few years and has developed a programme, techniques and resources which help the student produce strong presentations and exhibitions, and essays using multiple perspectives, real life situations, knowledge questions through the various areas of knowledge and ways of knowing .
Anna uses a range of personalized techniques to help students remain motivated and focused, with structured work in manageable quantities; as well as provide opportunities to reflect on previous work before moving on, particularly for the IA and Paper 1. She has encouraged and promoted the use of checklists for essays for Paper 2 and 3 and also provided guidance booklets that have helped students write relevant and concise essays meeting the necessary criteria set out by the IB. Using self-assessment through IB examination papers, markschemes, as well as students reading and marking anonymous essays, helps provide the student with greater insight as to the knowledge and skills required and helps build personalized targets for improvement.

She received a commendation as CAS Coordinator from the IB at St Georges English International School, Cologne. Moreover, her role as a rigorous Extended Essay Supervisor in History highlights Anna’s full awareness of the IBDP framework and understanding required to then teach a Group 3 subject within a demanding programme. She knows this helps students who are under immense pressure not to be overwhelmed, but instead foster a clear and structured learning environment encouraging accomplishment within the subject.
