Geography

David's biography:

David has 12 years experience of teaching geography across a range of levels, including KS3, GCSE, IGCSE, A-Level and IB at Manchester Grammar School and Stockport Grammar School, two of the best schools in North West England. During this time he has worked as both Head of Department and Head of Year, giving him extensive experience of the academic and pastoral challenges facing young people. Through these roles, he has had the privilege of contributing to and overseeing many academic success stories. David is a human geography specialist but has taught both human and physical geography throughout his teaching career from KS3 to 6th form. He has extensive experience of fieldwork, including the implementation of the new GCSE and A-Level fieldwork requirements.

David also has experience of education outside the school classroom. He led undergraduate geography tutorials for a year at the University of Edinburgh and has experience as an examiner for Edexcel Geography IGCSE. David is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and some of his geography work has been published by Oxford University Press through the GeoActive series.

One of David's best skills is building good relationships with the young people that he teaches. He is naturally intuitive and perceptive and is good at identifying student strengths and areas for growth. David enjoys teaching 1:1 and in small groups and uses a range of different methods with his students. He particularly values the use of visual methods to present and unpack information and ideas. He is an excellent verbal communicator and uses this skill to carefully explain concepts and ideas to help his students develop and deepen their knowledge and understanding.

David has helped prepare geography students for university, including Oxbridge. This preparation has included the reviewing of personal statements, holding mock interviews and running discussion sessions to explore and develop the wider geographical interests of potential university geographers.

David believes that students need to recognised and valued for who they are and that they should not be defined by their achievements and struggles. He also believes in the importance of helping young people achieve their potential and possibilities, which has become a foundational philosophy to all his work with young people.

David studied geography at the University Edinburgh and was awarded a MA (Hons). The third year of his undergraduate studies was spent at the University of California, Berkeley, in the USA. David subsequently went on to study international relations and conflict for a MSc (Econ) at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth before being awarded his PGCE from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne.

David has now moved out of the teaching profession and is using his geography teaching experience to tutor students and sharing his expertise and love of geography through leading groups overseas and in the outdoors. He enjoys fell running and cycling and is also a qualified Mountain Bike Leader, which he has used to coach and guide young people for over a decade.

David's qualifications:

David qualified to teach Geography in 2005, and holds a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) from University of Newcastle upon Tyne.

David's International Baccalaureate (IB) experience:

David taught International Baccalaureate Geography at both Higher and Standard Level for 3 years. Despite being in a school setting, class sizes ranged from one to three students meaning that David adopted a more discursive tutoring approach to teaching the IB rather than that of a classroom teacher overseeing a larger class. This involved a lot of interpersonal interaction and individualised exploration of each student's knowledge and understanding. David’s tutoring approach to teaching IB was effective as his students all achieved grades 6 and 7 in their IB Geography. As well as overseeing the Internal Assessment, David has also supervised Extended Essays with a geographical focus.
