Greg was a great tutor for our son who was quite reticent to start tutoring. However he thoroughly enjoyed Greg's lessons and was sad not to have lessons with him anymore.

Greg's biography

Greg is a highly qualified teacher and tutor with 7 years’ experience. Having secured a First Class degree in politics, he moved into teaching. He studied at the UCL Institute of Education (the #1 rated provider of teacher training worldwide), and attained Qualified Teacher Status with ‘outstanding’ grading.

Since then, he has built up a proven track record in schools and as a tutor, working with groups of children and 1 to 1, with a particular emphasis on exam preparation. This combination of experiences has given him a compelling set of skills in lesson planning, behaviour management, pedagogy, subject and curriculum knowledge and relationship and confidence building.

His methodology is simple and twofold: know the subject and know the child.

If he knows the subject, he can plan memorable and engaging lessons which promote depth and breadth of learning. If he knows the child, he can tailor his teaching and content to their strengths and needs, he can diagnose accurately their misconceptions and plan next steps, and he can motivate them to want to learn and succeed.

Testimonials:

Greg prepared our son, who was living overseas and attending school in complete immersion of a foreign language, for his UK 11 plus exams. During a very stressful time for our son Greg was patient, creative and resourceful in his methods. Our son didn’t want to do the lessons, struggled with concentration and railed against having to do extra prep at every opportunity. Greg returned after each challenging session with fresh ideas, determination and his innate ability to relate to our son on his level. Over time they built up a real camaraderie, trust and respect.

Our daughter is now working with Greg and she always leaves the lesson a different person; full of energy and feeling proud of what she has achieved. Greg is a complete natural at tapping into the inner resilience of our children that we, as parents, may not so readily see in them. Greg shares experiences from his own childhood which helps the children understand that what they are up against with difficulties at school, with siblings, study and tests is nothing new. Without mollycoddling either child, he honoured their need for context: (“What is the point of doing all this study anyway?” or “Why can’t I just do it this way? I get the same result” etc.)

Greg is expert at extracting focus and results from the children when they don’t even realise they are doing it. He is deeply experienced and therefore well able to pivot from a lesson plan that is not working in the moment.

The net result of our son’s time with Greg is that despite all odds and some seemingly impossible weeks with our son he was offered placed at both of the schools we had pinned our hopes on. We are so grateful for Greg’s ongoing commitment, professionalism and genuine care. I cannot imagine a better tutor.

"Greg has been a fantastic maths tutor to our daughter throughout the lockdown. We were worried about her falling behind, but with Greg's tailored approach we have been delighted to see her really blossom and exceed the level of her class peers. He is very patient, approachable and makes the lessons fun - our daughter really looks forward to her Maths lessons with him! I was also really impressed by how well learning over Skype worked. Our daughter is only Year One, but Greg had the perfect mix of show and do, making it interactive and keeping her engaged. He's clearly an experienced and talented teacher - we're very pleased to hav benefited from his expertise."
