John has been AMAZING. His erudite and intelligent comments have helped me shape my own ideas on an essay topic I stood little chance of understanding on my own. John offered expert guidance, knowledge and support. While I was located on the other side of the world, John was 100% reliable and quick to respond with well crafted feedback. I can highly recommend John as a tutor and I feel lucky and grateful to have found him.

John's biography

John has tutored privately for 11 years. After a bachelor's degree in biomedical science, he starting tutoring during his time as a classroom teacher of physics at Mascalls School in Kent, where he was also teacher in charge of physics, continuing throughout his master's and PhD studies in linguistics. John continues to tutor students in English, philosophy, TOK, mathematics and the sciences while also lecturing in linguistics at Queen Mary University of London. This year John is teaching Academic English in Finland while pursuing a postgraduate diploma in mathematics and physics.

John uses supportive, facilitative dialogue to build students' confidence and to encourage curiosity, questioning and perseverance. While developing these qualities is an end in itself, John makes prominent use of past exam questions to tailor this learning in a time-efficient manner to students' goals for exam technique and attainment.

John currently combines tutoring a range of subjects with academic research and teaching in linguistics. He enjoys hiking and listening to popular science audiobooks.

IB Experience

John's PhD was about the relationship between knowledge and language. This expertise on epistemology and its relationship to academic language is of particular value in preparing the Theory of Knowledge (TOK) essay.

Recent testimonials

John has been tutoring our daughter, an A-level student, for just over 4 months. The lessons are online as we live outside the UK. John is very knowledgeable and appears to have wealth of tutoring experience. John particularly helps our daughter in preparing for the exam style questions. John also provides email support as and when needed. We would be happy to recommend John for physics training to any A-level student
