Nick has a First Class degree in History and thirty years of teaching experience in the 13 -18 age range. He spent the vast majority of his career teaching at Charterhouse independent school, where he was Head of Department for five years and a boarding housemaster for nine.
He has, therefore, academic prowess and a deep well of experience in mentoring and positively helping teenagers to succeed. It should be added that Nick was awarded the Earl of Derby prize, on graduation, for the best degree in the entire University of London in that year.
Nick has worked as an examiner for AQA at both A level, and GCSE. He has taught IB and assessed IB coursework and marked Common Entrance History pacers for Charterhouse entry. He is well aware of the skills and techniques needed to reach the top grades in examinations. He has also helped to create the syllabus for the Cambridge International Board’s Pre-U course in History and tutored pupils on University admission preparations.
His time as a housemaster has undoubtedly helped him to develop an understanding of, and empathy with, teenagers facing examination pressures in these life-changing years. His approach is thoughtful and always built upon communicating clearly and frankly with students, and listening to their concerns.
He has also written two A Level textbooks: one on the Habsburg Empire, 1815-1918 (Hodder) and one on Anglo-Irish Relations, 1798-1922 (Routledge).
Nick has been married to his artist wife Helen for many years and has four grown up children - all of whom did very well academically - and, as such, is well aware of the challenges of being a parent. Beyond his passion for teaching History and Politics, Nick likes to write for his local community paper, the Hastings Independent Press. He also plays the piano and guitar, although some might say there is significant room for improvement. He supports Southampton FC, which remains a cross to bear, but Nick is nothing if not persistent.
