The Owl Tutor’s Summer 11+ Creative Writing Course

Is your child preparing for the 11+ exams to top independent schools? Our tailored summer courses are designed to transform their creative writing, a skill that often makes up 50% of the English entrance exam.

Whether your child needs to build confidence or refine their storytelling, our small-group, online classes will provide the expert guidance they need to stand out.

Delivered by an Experienced Independent School Teacher and Published Author

Our lead tutor, Finnian, brings a wealth of experience from top-tier independent schools and as a published author, he knows exactly how to nurture a child’s writing voice.

With deep insight into the assessment expectations of leading schools, Finnian focuses on what examiners look for and how to help your child deliver it. Furthermore, the ability to write well is a life skill that will serve them well for years to come.

Various Levels of Courses

Each course consists of 4 interactive lessons, delivered over one week, and grouped by ability to ensure tailored teaching:

Tier One – Foundation

For students building core creative skills

• Descriptive writing: setting, mood, and place

• Structuring a story with a strong narrative arc

• Introducing figurative language confidently

(For students in need of immediate improvement or 10+ entry to KCW, Trinity, Emanuel and Whitgift etc)

Tier Two – Intermediate

For students ready to develop complexity and contrast

• Using contrast to create tension and atmosphere
• Experimenting with tone, voice, and perspective
• Emotionally resonant writing through metaphor and detail

(Appropriate for schools such as Dulwich College, Alleyn’s, Emanuel, Whitgift etc)

Tier Three – Advanced

For students aiming to excel at a competitive level

• Creating layered, believable characters
• Writing natural dialogue that drives plot
• Mastering endings that leave a lasting impression

(Appropriate for schools such as King’s College Wimbledon, Harrow etc)

Courses run weekly from Monday to Thursday, with your choice of Morning or Afternoon slots:

2:30 pm – Foundation
3:40 pm – Intermediate
4:50 pm – Advanced

Week 1: 7th 8th 9th 10th July
Week 2: 14th ,15th , 16th , 17th July
Week 3: 21st , 22nd 23rd 24th July
Week 4: 28th , 29th , 30th 31st July

Week 5: 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th August
Week 6: 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th August
Week 7: 18th, 19th, 20th, 21th August
Week 8: 25th, 26th, 27th, 28th August

Each class is capped at just six students to ensure maximum individual attention and feedback.

Each session is capped at a maximum of six students. This is to ensure that each child receives the support to develop their creative writing skills and receive feedback. As such, given the anticipated high demand, places may fill up fast.
