In a previous life, Kay studied architectural engineering and worked in construction for four years before training to teach. Kay brings this experience into her lessons by using real life contexts to support the teaching of key physics concepts.
She trained to teach via the Teach First program, supported by outstanding mentors who ensured that she taught engaging lessons with clear explanations which allowed students to make excellent progress during lessons. She continued to teach at her original placement school for five years, where she also mentored new teachers.
After this, Kay moved into the world of international teaching and has taught in both Southeast Asia and Latin America. She has experience of teaching the UK National Curriculum in Science, as well as IGCSE Double Award Science (Biology, Physics and Chemistry), IGCSE Physics, and IB Diploma SL and HL Physics. During her 12 years of teaching she has developed a wide range of tried, tested and perfected teaching resources which she adapts to suit the unique needs of each student. Her teaching is based on strong, positive, professional relationships with the children she works with, and their families, and she endeavours to ensure a deep understanding of the syllabus before supporting students to apply this understanding to exam-style questions. Kay finds that many students struggle with the mathematical element of physics, and takes great pleasure in patiently guiding them to understand how to rearrange and apply the necessary equations so that they experience success. In addition to this, she emphasises understanding of exam board command words and accurate use of technical vocabulary to describe and explain concepts.
IB Experience
Kay has taught IB DP SL Physics for 6 years, during which time she supported students to develop a deep understanding of the contents of the Physics Guide, and to be able to apply this understanding both to the Internal Assessment and the three External Assessment exams.
Kay really enjoys guiding students to complete an outstanding internal assessment, beginning with choosing a suitable research question which will enable them to demonstrate their Physics knowledge and achieve the grade that they deserve. This means that students enter their final exams confident that they are already on the way to achieving the grade that they need to get into their chosen university.
Kay uses lots of past IB exam questions to prepare students for the external assessment to ensure that students understand the meaning of the command terms and the vocabulary and mathematical strategies required to answer them.
Kay is the author of five chapters of the new Kognity online textbook, written for the new IB Physics Guide for first examinations in 2025.
