The Oundle School has asked us to share a message about an exciting new opportunity in conjunction with Swansea University. Budding engineers, aged 14-16 please take note! Please contact the Oundle School directly if you are interested in their offer.
Oundle School has partnered with Swansea University to offer a unique 5-day Residential Engineering Course for 14-16 years from 3rd – 7th July 2023. The course will be led by the Head of Aerospace Engineering at Swansea University, Dr. Ben Evans with his team of experts and hosted in Oundle School’s state of-the-art SciTec facility and Engineering Centre in Oundle, Northamptonshire.
Working as a team, participants will design rocket cars using CAD software OnShape and build models with the latest 3D printing technology. Once completed, the cars will be tested in a state-of-the-art Wind Tunnel, before moving outside to test launch. It is a fantastic opportunity for any teenager with an interest in science, technology, engineering and maths or who is looking to study Engineering at university, with the programme combining workshop sessions in groups, practical, hands-on design and build experience. Participants will learn how to use industry leading equipment and be supported by Engineering and Aerospace specialists who worked on the iconic Bloodhound SLR, which currently holds the World Land Speed Record.
As part of the residential experiences, they will also attend evening demonstrations, including “From the Moon to Mars” presented by Imperial College London and “Murderous Maths Mayhem” with Kjartan Poskitt, alongside a guided visit to the Coventry Transport Museum to see the Bloodhound car and experience the land speed record in 4D.
Now in its second year, the course is limited to 48 students, with full board accommodation is included. The cost is £1200, with a small number of sponsored places also available on a first come first served basis.
“The summer Engineering Course at Oundle School is a fantastic opportunity for young people to experience the full process of engineering design on a project linked to the exciting Bloodhound Land Speed Record project. Over the course of the week, pupils get to experience going from concept design right through to manufacture and testing of a rocket car designed to achieve maximum speed. It provides an opportunity to engage with some of the cutting edge engineering research used to design the Bloodhound vehicle and research being carried out in Engineering design at Swansea University. I strongly recommend this experience for anyone with an interest in engineering or considering
studying engineering at university.”
Dr. Ben Evans Head of Aerospace Engineering Swansea University
“What I liked about this course is you learn by doing. I really hope it happens again.”
Thomas, 15 year old pupil
