Niraj's biography
After gaining invaluable experience of real-life Economics working in the banking industry at Goldman Sachs, Niraj decided he wanted to do something different. Having achieved a first-class honours degree in Economics and International Development at the University of Bath, his travelling during a gap year opened his eyes to the disheartening state of education in developing countries – seeing children with a passion to learn but lacking the opportunities reaffirmed a desire to work in the education sector to try and help all children achieve their potential and life opportunities. Completing the Teach First leadership development programme, he has taught for three years at a high-achieving state school in Westminster, wherein he devised many interventions which successfully raised the attainment of Economics A-level students. These included weekly catch-up clubs, regular target setting and revision sessions. He has also taught Functional Skills, DiDA and the new GCSE in ICT.
Inspired by Amartya Sen, Niraj believes in working hard for equality in opportunities. Education can open or close the doors for many of life’s opportunities, and thus he goes out of his way to ensure that his every student can fulfil their potential. Tutoring one-to-one gives him the chance to personalise learning for his students and his greatest reward is witnessing their progress. In his spare time, Niraj is a keen photographer and has taken on numerous assignments including the teaching of BTEC photography to young teenagers, with the majority of his students passing with distinction. He has also taken photographs and created documentary films for charities carrying out humanitarian activities. His passion for nature and the outdoors takes him on walks in numerous places (with his camera amongst others!) and he enjoys running and playing racquet sports.
