David has 12 years of experience teaching geography as a classroom teacher and Head of Department across KS3, GCSE, IGCSE, A-Level and IB at leading independent schools in North West England. David also holds an MSc in psychology which he has used in his extensive pastoral work with vulnerable children and is currently towards a doctorate in educational and child psychology.
David has tutored students in IB, A-Level and GCSE geography within the UK and abroad, helping them to achieve their goals, be it exam outcomes or developing subject knowledge.
David also has experience of education outside the school classroom. He led undergraduate geography tutorials for a year at the University of Edinburgh and has experience as an examiner for Edexcel Geography IGCSE. David is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and has had work published by Oxford University Press and Curriculum Press. He also works with a leading educational tour operator as a geography field studies tutor for schools visiting Iceland.
David has helped prepare geography students for university, including Oxbridge. This preparation has included the reviewing of personal statements, holding mock interviews, and running discussion sessions to explore and develop the wider geographical interests of potential university geographers.
David studied geography at the University of Edinburgh and was awarded an MA (Hons). The third year of his undergraduate studies was spent at the University of California, Berkeley, in the USA. David subsequently went on to study international relations and conflict for an MSc (Econ) at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth before being awarded his PGCE from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne.
David has moved out of teaching in the classroom and has spent the last 4 years working pastorally with students in schools serving disadvantaged communities. During this time, David has completed an MSc in Psychology which has helped him support students with social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) needs and additional learning needs (SEND). David is now working towards a doctorate in educational and child psychology with the University of Manchester.
David's growing expertise in psychology means that he is able to support students seeking help with this subject in addition to geography.
IB Experience
David taught International Baccalaureate Geography at both Higher and Standard Level for 3 years. David’s tutoring approach to teaching IB was effective as his students all achieved grades 6 and 7 in their IB Geography. As well as overseeing the Internal Assessment, David has also supervised Extended Essays with a geographical focus. Since moving on from teaching in a school environment, David has had the opportunity to tutor geography IB in an international school context.
