Are you hoping for your child to win one of the 160 places at Hampton School at 11+? Experienced teacher and school entrance tutor Holly takes us through all the need to know information!

Introduction to Hampton School Admissions

Hampton School has a significant intake of day boys at 11+, with about 160 students joining at this point.

There are a few things to know about entry to Hampton School at 11+. The school also has a significant entrance point at 13+, but you cannot apply to both 11+ and 13+. However, you can sit for the 10+ exam (deferred entry to Y7) and try again at 11+ if you are unsuccessful.

Entrance Examinations

Places are awarded on the basis of performance in a two-stage process. The first stage is a series of examinations in English (creative writing and comprehension), Maths and Reasoning. Examinations take place on one Saturday in November of Year 6 (the school year before admission), when students will be 10 or 11 years old. Following this, successful candidates are invited to an interview stage in January. The exams are designed to be accessible to both state-educated and prep school pupils and, while past papers are not available, a tutor can help find similar materials with which to practise and increase confidence.

Registration

Parents must register their children well before the entrance exams and definitely by November of Year 6. Contact the school for further information.

For 2024/2025, application fees to Hampton School were £125.

Interviews

If a student passes the 11+ exams for Hampton School, they will be invited to interview. At 11+ the interview process is usually quite short. There can be some anxiety around this, but don’t worry – essentially, the school wants to know if your child is going to be happy and do well there. In the words of one of our top school entrance tutors:

“The interview is a conversation with a purpose, designed to establish whether the school will suit you and you will suit the school. Ask your child to think about why they want to go there, what the school can offer them and what they can offer the school. Can they play an instrument, act, contribute to term sports, play chess, instigate a new club? Tell them!”

Scholarships

Scholarships at Hampton School at 11+ are offered in the areas of Academic, Art, Chess, Music, Performing Arts and Sport. There is also a Choral Scholarship. Contact the school for further information.
