How to get into City of London Girls Prep School at 7+

Introduction

City of London Girls school is a non denominational, academically selective, independent day school for girls aged 7-18 years old. Students can enter City of London girls Prep School via the main admission points at 7+, 11+ and 16+. The school has a Christian ethos but welcomes girls from all denominations, faiths and backgrounds.
There are 24 places available into City of London Girls at 7+. There is a limit of 150 girls who take the assessment. Across the 3 entry points, 45% girls join from maintained sector schools and 55% from independent schools.

Before you apply

Parents considering their daughter for City of London Girls are encouraged by the school to attend an open event. For entry at 7+, the school holds 3 events every year, 1 in June and 2 in September. In Autumn 2018, the next open events for 7+ is scheduled for Wednesday 12th September between 2-3:30pm and Monday 17th September between 2-3:30pm.

During these open events, there is an opportunity to meet current staff students are It is not necessary to book. Small group tours are available by emailing the school if parents are unavailable to attend these events.

The most up to date Fees are available on the the Admissions section of the website. At the time of writing, the current termly fees were £6,128 and included school lunches.

Registration

In order to be eligible to take the assessment for City of London Girls, girls need to be registered with the school. Girls can be registered for the 7+ from the time they are in Year 1. To be eligible to register for the 7+, girls must have reached the age of 7 before September 1st in the year of entry and be in Year 2 when they sit the tests.

There is a registration fee is £125 for UK applicants and £155 for overseas applicants at this point. At the time of writing, registration had closed for registration for admission in September 2019. Application

Once the registration steps above have been taken, the school will be in touch with further details, mainly via email. References are requested from the girl’s current school.

The school does not offer any bursaries or scholarships at 7+.

Assessment(s)

The assessment day takes place in November when the child is in Year 2, prior to entering the school the following September. At the time of writing, the next assessment day was on Friday 9th November 2018.

The school operates a 2 stage assessment process.

The first stage of the assessment process takes place over a morning in early November. During this morning, the girls are required to sit tests in reading, story writing and maths. The tests are age standardised and are carried out in small groups. In the reading test, Skills that are assessed in the reading test include reading a simple story fluently and explaining the main points in it. In the story writing, girls are assessed on the ability to develop and write a clearly structured story with good spelling. In the Maths test, girls are assessed on are knowledge of 2x,3x,4x,5x and 10x table, recognising and using coins, their knowledge of length, measurement, capacity, weight and time. They are also assessed on their knowledge of the meaning of numbers, expressed through their ability to use this skill in activities such as grouping or scoring in a game.

After this stage, 50 girls are selected to take place in a second assessment morning in mid-late November. During this assessment morning, girls take part in practical activities and practical lessons in English, Maths and D.T. Girls are assessed on how well they interact and work with others as well as on the work they produce. As well as the Maths and English skills, girls are also assessed on their scientific enquiry skills, their inquisitiveness and interest displayed regarding how things happen, their interest in creative activities and on any trips or visits they have made.

In addition to this, some parents and girls may be invited to a short 20 minute interview to discuss the girls strengths and skills. This is based on information from the assessments to date as well as school reference. Girls are only invited to interviews if a particular issue has arisen during the process which requires discussion.

Results

Results of the first stage of assessment are emailed one week after the assessment morning. Final results are emailed out soon after the second assessment morning.

The school hold an offer holder morning in late January an another opportunity to speak to current girls and teachers.

The acceptance deadline is in mid-late February. However, the school states that if it reaches its maximum capacity for the new intake before this deadline it may prioritise acceptances at time of receipt. Therefore, early acceptance of a place is encouraged.
On accepting a place, a non refundable deposit of £1500 is required.

Destination schools

Once girls join the school at 7+, there is an expectation that they progress into City of London Girls school. In the sixth form, all students are prepared for university entrance and most leavers attend UK universities.
