Are you considering a boarding education for your UK-based child due to family circumstances? Does your child need to live away from home during term time? State boarding schools might be one solution. This blog explains more about state boarding schools and why they could be the right choice for your family.

What is a State Boarding School?

There are around thirty state boarding schools in the UK which provide accommodation for children who wish to board. Unlike private/ independent boarding schools, tuition is free, so families have only to cover the cost of accommodation and meals. State boarding schools are generally only open to UK-based families, although there are exceptions to this rule, such as families of the British Armed Forces who are stationed overseas.

Advantages of State Boarding Schools

State boarding schools offer economic advantages over private boarding schools. Education at these schools is state-funded and the cost of the school is therefore around half what it would be at an independent school which offers boarding. Families who wish their child to board or whose child needs to board out of necessity will find that other advantages are also offered, including building resilience, working independently and forming close friendships. There are usually extra-curricular activities offered at state boarding schools, but these are often subject to an extra charge. It is also worth mentioning that the sports, music art and drama facilities at state boarding schools are usually not comparable to those at private schools.

Who Can Attend a State Boarding School?

State boarding schools are open to UK residents only, unless a family member is serving in the British Armed Forces. Boarding options at these schools, in contrast to day options, do not require the family to live in a particular catchment area. However, other circumstances may apply. For example, some state boarding schools offer their places to families in particular need or to children who have a specific aptitude for Art, Music, Sport or Drama.

How to Apply to a State Boarding School?

The application process for state boarding schools varies between schools. Parents or guardians, in addition to completing the application form, will also need to provide additional documentation, including proof of residency or family circumstances. Children will need to hold a current UK passport to apply. As places are usually highly sought-after, most state boarding schools will also require an interview to determine how suitable the boarding environment is for the prospective student.

Examples of State Boarding Schools

There are around thirty state boarding schools in the UK, each with its unique character. Examples include Cranbrook School in Kent, known for its academic excellence and pastoral care, and The Royal Alexandra and Albert School in Surrey, which offers education all the way through from primary to sixth form. If you are interested in a specific state boarding school, it is also useful to explore the latest Ofsted reports, which will include a focus on boarding.

Conclusion

State boarding schools are a cheaper alternative to private boarding schools, and should be investigated when boarding is needed for UK-based families or families in the British Armed Forces. There are around thirty state boarding schools which offer different and unique settings and facilities around the United Kingdom.
