We believe that qualified teachers are uniquely positioned to provide outstanding tuition. However, we also recognise that not all qualified teachers excel in their craft. That’s why all of our tutors are not only certified educators but have also successfully passed our rigorous assessment process, proving they are truly exceptional teachers!

Why do our tutors cost what they do?
They are all experienced qualified teachers.

Many of our tutors are also examiners
They have achieved academic excellence themselves
Many of our tutors have achieved other relevant skills such as qualifications to assist students with special educational needs
How can I save money when using an Owl Tutor
Consider online tuition if you have not already done so. Most students at KS2 or above will have no problem engaging just as efficiently with an online tutor than a face to face one. Face to face tuition can be up to 50% more expensive for the same tutor!
Consider shorter sessions. Most tuition sessions are one hour. 40 minute sessions can often be effective and could reduce your fees by 33%.
Find out if there are times that you can offer to your tutor that are more convenient for them. Most tutors find it difficult to fill their hours during the day (9am to 3pm) in the week. Many of them will accept lower rates at these times.
How do our fees work?
Our tutors set the rates that they wish to be paid on each job. The rate that they will request will be dependent on a number of factors including:
The rate they wish to earn per hour
Whether the job is face to face or online
How much preparation time is required for each session
The tutor's remaining availability
As a parent, Mark is extremely easy to deal with, kind and very helpful, but the best feedback comes from the 18yo. He says: Mark is really easy to talk to and embraces when I go off on a tangent and start discussing another (unplanned topic). He relates it back to current issues and throws in fun facts. Mark is willing to help outside of sessions too, and creates revision notes from what we’ve covered which I can use later. He lets me decide what we need to cover (mum edit: in the beginning, on my request, Mark led the sessions to work out weaknesses). Mark simply makes Economics clearer.
Parent of A-Level Economics student
Mark's biography
Mark has over ten years of experience as Head of Economics at a leading independent girls' school, where he has inspired and empowered many students to develop a love of the subject as well as to achieve truly excellent grades (65% A*-A, 91% A*-B).
With over ten years of senior examining experience, he has significant expertise in guiding students to optimise their exam technique in order to achieve to their full potential.
He has taken on a number of private tuition clients in recent years. To give one case study, he took on a young man in April of year 13 who achieved Grade D in his mocks. They spent a full week together in the Easter holiday to diagnose gaps in his learning and to use a range of resources to upskill him in those areas. Mark created a strategic plan, with resources, for him to work through to rigorously master the key skills. In later follow-up sessions they worked to answer any questions he had, to strategically finetune his understanding as well as to optimise his exam technique. He achieved Grade A and went on to study at Durham University, where Mark continued to support him with tuition for some economics and quantitative skills modules.
He has an excellent track record of inspiring his students to study Economics courses at university level, supporting them to make successful applications to Oxford, Cambridge and LSE as well as other top universities in the UK, the USA, Europe and Hong Kong.
He also loves guiding students to develop their entrepreneurship skills. As a Centre Lead for the Young Enterprise Company Programme, his students won over forty awards in twelve years, created many amazing products and gained an incredible mix of skills.
For ten years, he also led a thriving and popular 'Academic Scholars Programme' for Gifted and Talented students. He inspired them to go beyond the curriculum, to make meaningful connections between subjects and to creatively apply their learning to current affairs.
In a previous post, he successfully taught Mathematics to all secondary ages and ability levels for five years; as well as teaching Economics A Level and Statistics GCSE.
He achieved his PGCE in Secondary Mathematics from Bath Spa University in 2006, achieved a First Class Honours in BSc MORSE (Mathematics, Operational Research, Statistics and Economics) from the University of Warwick in 2002 and achieved the highest grades in Mathematics, Economics and History A Levels in 1999.
After graduating from university, he worked for two years as an Actuarial Consultant in London before embarking on a career in teaching.
His philosophy of teaching is that 'if their eyes are shining, then you're doing it right'. When students are inspired, then they can achieve truly amazing things.
However, to achieve that perfect mix, there are a number of vital pillars including warmth and charisma, inspirational teaching and learning, highly-effective questioning, insightful personalised feedback, coaching to develop independence and targeting efforts strategically so that the time spent has the greatest impact on progress.
He has a wide range of interests including sport (mainly football and cricket), well-being (yoga and meditation), languages (fluent in Spanish) and music (writing music as well as playing piano, guitar and ukulele).
He loves learning about a wide range of fields from practical philosophy to literature and cutting-edge technology, so he enjoys reading widely from a range of books, periodicals and blogs as well as listening to podcasts.
He loves empowering students to achieve their best, both academically and in life, and he looks forward to helping you too.
