Barbara is a dedicated, creative and experienced primary school teacher. She obtained a BA (Hons) in Psychology and completed her postgraduate teaching qualification at the Institute of Education (UCL). With over 11 years of experience of teaching, Barbara has taught a variety of subjects including Maths, English (reading, writing, grammar, spellings and punctuation) and science across Key Stage 2. She specialises in the Year 5 and 6 curriculum, with 7 years dedicated to successfully preparing Year 6 students for KS2 SATs and their transition to secondary school.
Barbara has extensive experience in creating and delivering bespoke booster classes and interventions for small groups and on a one-to-one basis to enhance her pupils’ knowledge and confidence in Maths, reading and grammar and to prepare children for exam-style questions.
She is skilled in supporting children with a wide range of needs. Whether they are working below, at, or above year group expectations, Barbara tailors her approach to ensure each child is challenged and supported. Her experience also includes working with children who have special educational needs, such as ASD, dyslexia, speech and language difficulties, as well as those with English as a second language.
When tutoring, Barbara values building a picture of a child’s current abilities in the chosen subject, so she has a clear idea of their strengths and areas for growth. Barbara prides herself in using interactive and motivating activities, games and strategies tailored for the child’s needs. With her carefully planned lessons, constructive feedback and effective communication with both children and parents, Barbara’s goal is to secure pupil’s core skills and develop their confidence. This sets a solid foundation for her to build onto in tutoring sessions, and for the child to thrive with when back in their classroom.
