Why study IGCSE Biology?

If Biology is one of your IGCSE choices, you are in good company. Biology is always one of the top five choices for IGCSE, as it leads to further study at A-Level but is also a fascinating subject to study for your own interest. In this article we look in detail at Cambridge International IGCSE Biology, with particular emphasis on the syllabus for 2026-2028.

The Cambridge International IGCSE Biology (0610) syllabus is designed to provide a full and complete introduction to biological science. For students, it develops both theoretical understanding (how far you understand the concepts behind the science) and practical scientific skills (through those fun experiments you will do in class). The course covers a number of key areas of biology: these include cell structure and movement across membranes, biological molecules and enzymes, plant and human nutrition, transport systems, respiration, coordination, reproduction, inheritance, ecology, and biotechnology. In addition to this there are some global topics, as you would expect from an IGCSE course, so students also explore environmental sustainability, conservation, and the human impact on ecosystems. These topics are always popular with students who can relate them to their study of other humanities subjects such as politics, geography  or history.

Who should study Cambridge IGCSE Biology?

As with other subjects, where the syllabus varies depending on ability, the IGCSE Biology syllabus is structured with two levels of content: Core and Extended. Whilst all students study the Core material, those students who are aiming for a higher grade also study the Supplement content (Extended content). In terms of assessment, the exams feature both multiple-choice questions and longer answers, and there is also a choice of either practical laboratory examinations or an alternative-to-practical paper. This means that even if you don’t have access to a lab, you can still complete all the elements of the course.

A key and central feature of the course is the practical application of scientific Biology. The syllabus uses a number of transferrable skills here, with students focusing on investigation, experimentation, data handling, and scientific reasoning. After all, Biology is by its very nature, experimental. In addition, and linking in with their study of Mathematics, students are expected to develop their ability to interpret graphs and use scientific equipment, all the while applying mathematical concepts to biological problems. These skills are a great preparation for future STEM courses or careers.

The benefits of studying Cambridge IGCSE Biology

The benefits of IGCSE Biology for students are really significant. Firstly, the course allows students to build a strong foundation in biological knowledge that supports progression to advanced study, including A-level sciences, medicine, environmental science, and biotechnology. Secondly, the practical and analytical skills which can be gained during the course (primarily problem solving, critical thinking, and data analysis) are transferable to so many other academic disciplines and even to careers beyond science. Thirdly, and this is just for IGCSE, the international perspective of the syllabus helps students to think about and understand global health, sustainability, and environmental issues.

IGCSE Biology should be one of your top choices, as it is for so many other students worldwide: it really does future-proof your career.
