I can recognise and use symbols for pounds (£) and pence (p)

What does this objective mean?

This objective asks that children are able to read and write amounts of money that include £ and p.

How might it be assessed in the 7+?

Children may be asked to do a range of tasks involving money and it is important that they are confident in reading and writing amounts of money in the correct format.

How do I teach this to my child?

Give your child an amount aurally (e.g. five pounds sixty two) and ask them to write it down. Ensure they are able to use the symbols correctly. A common mistake to watch out for is including the pence sign (e.g. £5.62p).

How can we practise this?

When you are at the shops, ask your child to read you the prices of items.

Practise reading and writing different amounts of money until your child is confident.
