Carl

Carl is a highly-qualified chemistry teacher, published author and examiner with a proven track record of transforming student outcomes. His students consistently achieve top grades, with 94% securing A*/A at A-Level or 6/7 in IB, an average +2 grade uplift, and 96% success for those targeting medicine, dentistry or veterinary science. A high proportion progress each year to study these subjects at leading universities including Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial College, Edinburgh and the Royal Veterinary College.

Carl’s expertise is anchored in three standout credentials: active examiner for IB Diploma Chemistry, and co-author of the official Cambridge University Press title Chemistry for Cambridge International AS & A Level: Exam Preparation and Practice. He is also currently writing a guide on the Internal Assessment for IB Diploma Chemistry, due for publication in summer 2026. With over 14,000 hours of dedicated one-to-one tuition delivered to students in 26 countries, he specialises in building rock-solid conceptual understanding before refining exam technique and advanced problem-solving skills.

After completing an MChem in Medicinal Chemistry at the University of Manchester and a PhD in Organic Chemistry at Durham University, Carl founded and led a high-tech chemistry and engineering R&D company serving global clients. The satisfaction of helping students as a part-time tutor eventually led him to train as a teacher; he gained a PGCE and QTS from Newcastle University in 2013.

Drawing on his industrial and entrepreneurial background, Carl teaches beyond the textbook, bringing real-world applications to life and developing the vocational skills that competitive university courses demand. He also offers targeted support with UCAS personal statements, interview preparation and chemistry-related career advice.

Carl now works full-time as a professional tutor and examiner, enabling him to focus 100% on his students’ success.
