What is UCAS?
UCAS (Universities and Colleges Admissions Service) is a service which brings together universities and colleges under one umbrella so that students can apply to them through a standardised process. It allows prospective students to apply to different courses at multiple institutions, and offers a clear timetable which is the same for (almost) everyone.
Mastering the UCAS application
In 2024, UCAS requires a personal statement, but this will slightly change in 2025 so that students are answering three specific questions and have a word limit for each. In both cases, a UCAS application requires both careful planning and attention to detail. It’s important to consider the deadlines for applications, which are earlier if you are applying to Oxford or Cambridge. The UCAS application guide will provide you with all the dates you need to know. You also have to ensure you have checked all your personal information, as this is the basis on which universities will make their offers.
Crafting a stellar UCAS personal statement
Your UCAS personal statement for 2024 applications is important. It is what universities use to choose between students who have similar predicted grades, so it can be the difference between being offered a place or not. Make sure you highlight why you are a good fir for the courses you have chosen so that the institution can see if you would succeed there. For example, you can show how your extra curricular activities fit in with your chosen subject, or how you came to be interested in that specific course. Make sure your statement has a beginning, middle and end and is well-structured to reflect your academic ability.
Why Russell Group universities?
Russell Group universities are 24 universities who have decided to form a group which indicates to prospective students that they are research-intensive, highly-academic institutions. If you wish to apply to a Russell Group university you will need to show you have the commitment to a challenging course which will be focused on achieving high grades and outcomes. These universities are highly sought-after and many international students apply to them, meaning places for UK students can be limited.
Unlocking opportunities at top universities
If you wish to apply to a top university you will need to show you stand out from the crowd. Those students who are successful at these institutions are those who have led clubs and societies at their school, or have undertaken voluntary work and committed to their community. There are plenty of opportunities to succeed at these universities if you craft your personal statement carefully and aim high with your sixth form studies.
