How to get into City Junior School at 7+

Are you hoping for your child to win one of the places at City Junior School at 7+? Read on! This blog tells you everything you need to know about the application process: from registering your child, to pre-tests, exams and the interview.

Introduction

City Junior School is a non denominational, academically selective, independent day school for girls and boys aged 7-11 years old. It is a fairly new school, having opened its doors in September 2022. Students can enter City Junior School via the main admission point at 7+.

Before you apply

Parents considering City Junior School for their child are encouraged by the school to attend an open event. Details can be found here:

During these open events, there is an opportunity to meet current staff and students. Small group tours are available by emailing the school if parents are unavailable to attend these events.

The most up to date fees are available on the the Admissions section of the website. At the time of writing, the current termly fees for City Junior School in 2024/2025 were £8,234 and include school lunches. This is equivalent to £24,702 a year. Bursaries are available for entry into Year 3.

Registration

In order to be eligible to take the assessment for City Junior School, children need to be registered with the school. To be eligible to register for the 7+, children must have reached the age of 7 before September 1st in the year of entry and be in Year 2 when they sit the tests.

There is a registration fee of £160 at this point. Registration for September 2025 entry opens on 2nd September 2024.

Application

Once the registration steps above have been taken, the school will be in touch with further details, mainly via email. References are requested from the child’s current school.

Assessment(s)

The assessment day takes place in November when the child is in Year 2, prior to entering the school the following September. At the time of writing, the next assessment day was on Friday 29th November 2024.

The school operates a 2 stage assessment process.

The first stage of the assessment process takes place over a morning. During this morning, the children are required to sit tests in reading comprehension, story writing and maths. The tests are age standardised and are carried out in small groups.

After this stage, children who are successful at Stage 1 are invited back in January 2025 to complete a group discussion and interview stage. These will take place between 9th and 16th January 2025. A reference will also be requested from the child’s current school.

Results

Results of the assessment are emailed one week after the assessment morning, on Friday 24th January 2025.

The school holds an offer holder morning in late January – Tuesday 28th January for entry in 2025.

The acceptance deadline is in mid-late February. On accepting a place, a non refundable deposit of £6500 is required.

Destination schools

Once children join the school at 7+, there is an expectation that they progress into City of London Girls or Boys school. In the sixth form, all students are prepared for university entrance and most leavers attend UK universities.
