I can measure the perimeter of simple 2-D shapes

What does this objective mean?

This asks that children are able to measure the lengths of simple 2-D shapes and add them together to find the perimeter.

How might it be assessed in the 7+?

Your child may be asked to find the perimeter of a simple shape using lengths already given, or by using a ruler to measure the lengths themselves.

For example…

Using your ruler, find the perimeter of this square:

How do I teach this to my child?

Practise finding the perimeter of a few different shapes. Explain to your child that if they are finding the perimeter of a square, all sides will be the same length. If measuring a rectangle, each pair of sides will be equal.

How can we practise this?

Give your child some example questions to work through (see resources)
