Introduction

South Hampstead High School is an independent day school for girls aged 4-18 in Hampstead, North London. Students can enter the Junior School via admissions points at 4+ and 7+. At the 7+ entry point, 24 girls are accepted into the school.

Before you apply

It is recommended that parents book a place on an Open Day if they are considering applying to the school. Dates for Autumn open days will be released on the school’s website in early September:

https://www.shhs.gdst.net/admissions/joining-the-junior-school/open-days/

These days are for adults only. Students have the opportunity to tour the school on their assessment day.

South Hampstead state that they will always consider siblings for places, but cannot guarantee admission as all places are based on assessment.

For the academic year 2025/26, the fees for studying in the Junior section of South Hampstead High School were £7,726 per term, or £23,178 per year. These fees do not include lunches.

The school does offer a variety of bursaries and scholarships, but only to those entering the senior school.

Registration

In order to register their child for the 7+, parents must complete an application form. This can be found here:

https://www.shhs.gdst.net/admissions/joining-the-junior-school/entry-at-7/

A non-refundable fee is charged for taking the entrance examination and must be sent with the application form. Applications for entry in September 2026 are open until Monday 29th September 2025. All applicants are invited for assessment. Before the assessment, a reference will be requested from the child’s current school.

Assessment

South Hampstead High School have a two-stage assessment procedure for the 7+. The first stage consists of written tests in English (creative writing and comprehension) and Maths. These tests are based on the national curriculum for year 2, although there are likely to be some higher-level questions. The first assessment is on Friday 10th October 2025.

Girls who perform well are invited back for the second stage of the assessment procedure in January. They will have an interview and take part in observed small-group activities. Places are then offered on the basis of their performance.

Results

Places will be offered in early February and parents will be given a deadline to accept. Once a place has been accepted, a non-returnable deposit is required.

Destination schools

Students successfully applying at 7+ usually stay at the school for the duration of their schooling.
