Devon has seven state grammar schools, spread across three separate areas: East Devon, Plymouth, and Torbay. For families who move to the county or are exploring their options for the first time, getting a clear picture of what to do and when can feel genuinely confusing. Unlike counties such as Buckinghamshire, where a single test covers all grammar schools through one coordinated process, Devon has no unified system. Each area operates independently, with different tests, different exam providers, different registration windows, and different deadlines. The schools do not share results across clusters.
The three Plymouth schools (Devonport High School for Boys, Devonport High School for Girls, and Plymouth High School for Girls) share an exam and have moved to Quest Assessments as their provider from September 2026. The three Torbay schools (Churston Ferrers, Torquay Boys’, and Torquay Girls’) also share an exam, provided by GL Assessment, and operate as the Torbay Consortium. Colyton Grammar School in East Devon is entirely separate, using its own test provided by FSCE. If your child is applying to schools across more than one of these clusters, they will need to register and sit each test independently.
The timeline below covers the process across all three clusters, from early preparation through to National Offer Day.
