City of London Junior School Entrance Guide

Lisa has been such a great teacher for our daughter. She identified quickly the areas that needed improvement for her 7+ entry assessments. Not only were the lessons good and joyful, but Lisa also taught our daughter important strategies how to solve questions efficiently. We were very happy with Lisa and most importantly her tutoring was successful for our daughters 7+ entry exams into very selective schools. She managed to do her exams calmly and was very confident and never stressed. We were very lucky to have Lisa and couldn't recommend her more.

Opened in September 2022, City Junior School is a feeder school for City of London Girls and City of London School, which cater for girls and boys respectively from Year 7 (11+). Co-educational, City Junior School accepts pupils from Y3 (7+) and also has occasional places available in other year groups. It is situated in central London and boasts sole access at times to gardens and historic indoor areas. Please read on for information about this new school, and to find tutors who can support your child throughout the admissions process.

Admissions Competitiveness & CEM Benchmark

How Competitive Is Entry to City of London Junior School?

Entry to City of London Junior School is moderately competitive, with scores typically in the top 25% nationally.

While the school does not publish official CEM thresholds, aggregated outcomes and educator insight suggest that successful applicants typically achieve:

Indicative competitive range: 110–115.

Owl Tutors Competitiveness Index: 6.5 / 10 (our CEM age-standardised score).

Selectivity Tier: Tier 5

This classification places City of London Junior School among competitive independent schools.

Schools do not publish official cut-off scores. The range and tier above are based on aggregated outcome patterns and educator insight, and are intended as indicative guidance rather than formal rankings.

What Does This Score Range Mean?

CEM scores are age-standardised, with:

  • 100 = national average
  • 115 = roughly top 15–20% nationally
  • 120 = roughly top 10%
  • 125+ = typically top 5% or higher

If competitive applicants are typically scoring in the 110–115 range, this suggests entry requires performance above the national average.

7+ Entry to City Junior School

7+ entry to City Junior School is through a two-stage process. The first stage, which takes place in the Autumn term of Year 2, is an assessment day, consisting of English and Maths tests, which are age-appropriate and based on the National Curriculum. The English test involves both comprehension and free writing, and the Maths test is made up of basic calculations and problem-solving. Following this, pupils are invited to interview for the second stage of the process; this day, which takes place early in the Spring term, also involves observation of the pupils by current staff, and problem-solving activities. References are then requested from the pupil’s current school, and offers are sent out shortly afterwards.

Bursaries to City Junior School

Bursaries are available to City Junior School at 7+ entry only for those who would otherwise not be able to afford the education offered. They are means-tested and must be applied for at the time of registration. Bursary application will include a home visit, and detailed guidance is available on the school website.
