Deciding whether or not to use a tutoring agency is important to many parents and students. It’s essential to draw up a list of the benefits and considerations before committing. Below are some useful tips and hints to guide you in making an informed decision.

Consider quality of service

When considering which tutoring agency to choose, the quality of the service provided is really important. Look for reviews and testimonials from parents and students who have previously used the service to gauge their effectiveness. Any reputable agency should be able to demonstrate a track record of both helping students and supporting parents to achieve their family’s goals. Some agencies will offer a trial lesson or a short period of time during which to make a final decision.

Qualified teachers are essential

At the time of writing the UK tutoring industry is completely unregulated, and anyone can (and does!) call themselves a tutor. Our view is that you should only trust qualified teachers to tutor your child. They will have thousands of hours of classroom teaching experience, and are professionally trained in how to teach their subject.

It is important to choose a teacher who has qualified under the UK system if you want a tutor who is preparing a child for a UK-based examination. By “qualified teacher”, we mean someone who has completed a PGCE or similar at a UK-based university, and those who have completed their QTS year at a recognised UK school.

Ensure DBS checks are conducted

Safeguarding is crucial when hiring a tutor, as they will be working one on one with your children. A professional tutoring agency will conduct DBS checks and will ask their tutors to be on the DBS update service. This means that agencies can easily check if there have been any updates to a tutor’s record and any incidents can immediately be noticed. The only way to know that an individual is safe to work with a child is to know that they have an Enhanced DBS check.

Safeguarding policies are important

Safeguarding policies are essential and ensure that the agency has plans in place if something goes wrong. A safeguarding policy is designed to show what happens when a disclosure is made, and how the agency will follow through on any allegations. It needs to be written for that specific agency and not simply downloaded in a generic format.

Look for customised learning plans

Every child learns in a slightly different way. A one-size-fits-all approach is not suitable for everyone, and you should choose an agency offering personalisation and an individual plan for your child. This allows the child to receive more effective tutoring, resulting in better academic progress for them and also fulfilling their potential.

Evaluate flexibility and availability

A reputable agency will fit in with your needs for flexibility and will allow you to set the times and days for lessons. They will have numerous tutors on their books and will be able to find someone to suit your requirements. Sometimes there might be a short wait for the right tutor but matching you with the person who will bring out the best in your child is not something to rush.

Technology integration can be beneficial

In today’s online age, high-level technology plays a crucial role in education. If you have access to a laptop and a good internet connection, consider online tuition. This vastly extends the number of tutors you can work with, and allow you to find exactly the right match for your child, even if they live hundreds of miles away. Rather than just replicating a one to one lesson, a good online tutor can use online platforms to enhance the child’s learning experience significantly.

If you are looking for an online tutor, then you have even more reason to use a good tutoring company,. They will have vetted and checked the tutor, which is difficult to do without meeting in person.

Cost considerations

The cost of private tuition can, and does, vary widely. It is best to choose an agency which offers transparent pricing and has no hidden fees. It can be risky and more costly in the long run to choose the least expensive option, as investing in a high-quality tutoring service often results in a more positive experience and outcome.

Assess communication channels

Communication is important and it is crucial that these are set up at the beginning of the agreement. Decide how you will communicate with the tutor and also with the agency. WhatsApp is an effective means of communication but ensure it remains professional at all times.

Track academic progress

A professional tutoring agency will provide at least monthly reports on the student’s progress. Tutors should also be available to discuss concerns, or they may route you through the agency if the concerns are more serious. There should always be someone to talk to, no matter how small your worry.
