Claire's biography

Claire is an experienced and enthusiastic teacher of Mathematics with 30 years experience. She has also been the Director of Sixth Form in one of England's foremost independent girls' schools. Claire has worked in England, Scotland and internationally. She takes great pleasure in supporting students in their understanding and building confidence. Working with individual students to identify strengths and weaknesses, she will build on a student's competencies and then extend these to problem solving by using applied examples.

With an honours degree in Mechanical Engineering, she is well placed to support students with their journey with mathematics. She has prepared students for all levels of the IB Diploma and her students regularly achieve a 6 or 7 in HL Mathematics. She has a wealth of resources to support students to improve their grades. She has also examined for IB SL Mathematics. She is also happy to prepare students for Maths content at university, such as for Psychology, Geography or Biology, especially if they have not encountered Maths since (I)GCE.

Whilst her expertise lies in the IB Diploma, Claire is equally fond of teaching KS3 and IGCSE Mathematics. She regularly has success with improving students' confidence in mathematics which is key to success. She has marked school entrance examinations up to 16+ .

As Director of Sixth Form, Claire worked with 100s of students to prepare them successfully for their UCAS applications. This starts early their Sixth Form, thinking about how to plan ahead or later on to help with planning and supporting the writing of a Personal Statement.


IB Experience

Claire has taught International Baccalaureate Mathematics for over 20 years and has been an IB Standard Level examiner. She has led and coordinated school departments in their development of the IB Maths courses and is up to date with the latest Analysis and Approaches and Applications and Interpretations courses at HL (primarily AA) and SL levels. She has regularly attended IB seminars and conferences in Maths both online and in person.

Owl Tutors school entrance training

Claire has successfully completed the Owl Tutors training course in 11 Plus exam preparation. This means they have a thorough understanding of the structure, content and demands of these exams and are qualified to prepare students. Training is delivered by Holly, a highly experienced school entrance tutor and member of the Owl Tutors team.

Claire's qualifications

Claire qualified to teach Maths in 1992, and holds a PGCE Secondary from St Andrews College of Education, Glasgow, Scotland.
