A PhD candidate, published poet, and A Level examiner, with over a decade of full-time teaching experience at selective independent schools, Andrew is passionate about inspiring students and dedicated to helping them make progress in English.
Having taught in a range of schools, he has a proven record of boosting attainment and adding value to students of all abilities. With six years (and counting) of examining experience (Pre-U, and A Level, alongside school entrance exams) he has a working knowledge of what is required to unlock the highest marks. Moreover, he is a Principal Examiner for the AFA in Creative Writing, a pioneering A Level-style creative writing qualification taught only in a handful of schools.
With all of this experience, he brings a unique blend of academic rigour, awareness of exam technique, and creativity to sessions, with a view to making them lively, engaging and purposeful.
His tutorials will involve a range of activities and tasks, some written, some discursive, all with a view to what works best for the individual. His experience as an examiner also lends unique insights into the marking process and what examiners look for at all stages.
A stretch and challenge specialist, with a keen interest in critical thinking, the Harkness Method (discussion-based learning) and independent learning, he’s always trying to improve his pedagogy and find new approaches to make tuition more effective. Working with high ability learners, he’s successfully prepared a number of students for Oxbridge and other Russell Group Universities over the years.
Whether you need to: achieve a better grade or simply get a pass; gain or regain confidence in English through 1-2-1 learning; rekindle a love of English that has died out from a restrictive school curriculum; reach new heights in your essay writing; be pushed further in your pursuit of a place at a prestigious public school or Oxbridge, he’d be delighted to work with you.
