Nolan's biography

Nolan qualified as a maths teacher with a PGCE from Kings College, London in 2004. Over a 20 year career he has successfully taught maths to all ages and ability levels from 11 to 18 years. Nolan has taught in London comprehensives, international schools in Brazil, Peru and Belgium and for five years in Denmark. In London and Denmark he taught maths at KS3, GCSE and A level and in Peru, Brazil and Belgium taught the International Baccalaureate maths courses including Applications and Interpretation higher level and both standard level courses.

Since 2020 Nolan has gained considerable experience with online teaching and has successfully tutored students studying maths for the IB and younger students working towards entrance exams for English private schools.

In his teaching Nolan emphasises the importance of properly understanding mathematical concepts, the development of key skills through practice and the ability to interpret mathematical language correctly. He also places great emphasis on enjoying mathematics and taking pleasure in problem solving as well as developing an interest in maths' history and critical thinking.

As well as a maths PGCE Nolan holds a masters degree in science communication from Imperial College, London and a bachelors degree in environmental sciences from the University of East Anglia.

Prior to teaching maths Nolan was a science and technology journalist and his wider professional experience enables him to put mathematical ideas into a wider societal context.

As well as maths teaching Nolan has experience teaching science, particularly physics and English as a foreign language. His international teaching experience has given him considerable understanding of cultural and language differences.

Nolan is friendly and approachable and develops good relationships with his students, enabling them to express themselves and to feel comfortable working with him.

IB Experience

Nolan has taught IB standard and higher level at Markham College, Lima and at the British School of Brussels. In Brussels he taught the applications and interpretation higher level course.

While teaching at Lima Nolan was responsible for guiding students through their maths explorations.

This last academic year Nolan has been an online tutor to a student studying maths standard level IB and iscurrently helping her develop her maths exploration.

In Lima, Nolan also advised colleagues teaching the theory of knowledge course and presented students with ideas from mathematics for their extended essays.
