Isabel

11 Plus, 13 Plus and English

Isabel's biography:

A graduate of Cambridge University, Isabel has been a full-time professional tutor since 2016. She has taught pupils of all abilities with a diverse range of educational needs, inspiring them to fulfil their potential and to achieve excellent results at 11+, 13+, GCSE, A-Level and IB.

Isabel completed her PGCE at Roehampton University’s prestigious teacher training faculty. During her teaching career, she worked at two Ofsted rated outstanding London schools, teaching English Literature and English Language at KS3, GCSE and A-Level. Consistently judged as an outstanding teacher, Isabel was asked to open her classroom to colleagues and parents to showcase innovative teaching.

Isabel is passionate about keeping up to date with new developments in learning. That is why she was one of the first teachers to train at King's College London in the Let's Think in English programme. This new style of teaching helps students to develop the reasoning skills that are so important for enjoying English and for succeeding in the new GCSE and A-Level exams.

Isabel finds it especially rewarding to work with students one-to-one, focusing on their needs and designing exciting and inspiring lessons. She believes that young people succeed when their learning goals are not abstract or dictated by someone else but are personally meaningful. She takes time to really get to know her students so she can put their learning into this context.

Isabel also believes that students learn best when they can see the real-world application of their knowledge and skills and when they are encouraged to aspire to the highest standards. This is why her own education and professional background is such an asset to her as a tutor. Before training to teach, Isabel worked in the media for six years as a copywriter and communications officer. She can show students how their English studies can empower them to enter this fast paced world, and she knows exactly what it takes to succeed.

When she's not teaching, Isabel loves challenging herself at the climbing wall. She is also a passionate reader and writer and tends to have about six books on the go simultaneously!

Isabel's qualifications:

Isabel qualified to teach English in 2013, and holds a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) from Roehampton University.

Recent testimonials:

"Isabel was an excellent guide for our daughter in her 11+ preparations. More than the whole preparation aspect, what I was really thankful for was she helped our daughter build a strong foundation in the English language which I believe will go a long way, especially in her secondary education. Also, as our daughter was naturally very creative, she was able to channelise that skill by giving it more structure and format. I was just amazed and blown away by some of our daughter's recent creative writing pieces. Isabel's guidance definitely made that difference. She also taught our daughter the art of precision which was handy in her comprehension exercises. Most importantly, she made the whole process fun and engaging and our daughter loved her classes with Isabel. She worked with our daughter for over a year and at the end of this engagement, I can confidently say that our daughter has a strong hold and a genuine love for the language. Our daughter made it to many top schools in London including CLSG and Godolphin & Latymer that we are having a tough time choosing. Overall, we really appreciate her efforts and are thankful to Isabel especially as we are not native English speakers. "
