John

With over 13,500 hours of personal teaching experience, John is an accomplished tutor and educational consultant who combines deep subject knowledge with a genuine passion for learning and an in-depth understanding of the British education system. He has extensive experience teaching the sciences and humanities across a range of levels, including GCSE, IGCSE, A Level, the IB Diploma Programme, and 13+ or scholarship preparation for competitive schools. John has an in-depth understanding of teaching practice and theory, specialising in the use of techniques such as metacognitive development and priming to promote a genuine interest, curiosity and increasing independence in his students.

Over more than a decade of professional tuition, John has successfully supported students to gain scholarships and places at many of the UK’s top schools, including Eton, City of London, Westminster, Winchester, KCS Wimbledon and St Paul’s. One of his pupils achieved the highest history score in the St Paul’s scholarship cohort, while others have progressed from having significant knowledge gaps to achieving places at highly selective schools. He has also helped numerous students secure offers from leading universities such as Cambridge, Imperial College, UCL and Durham through a long-term approach geared towards building a compelling application that goes beyond cliche references to books read or long-standing academic interests.

John works closely with students to develop their academic confidence and curiosity through immersive learning experiences (including residential placements, scientific experiments and educational visits) as well as long-term projects of interest on subject matters as varied as Alexander the Great and the technical and economic viability of supersonic passenger aviation. He places particular emphasis on helping students to think independently and engage deeply with their subjects. His approach is adaptive and supportive, and he has worked effectively with learners with mild dyslexia, ASD, ADHD and dyspraxia.

Above all, John brings warmth, rigour and enthusiasm to his teaching, ensuring that every student has the opportunity to achieve their potential and develop a lifelong love of learning.
