Benenden School entrance guide

Benenden School, until recently fully boarding, but now also offering day places for girls aged 11-18, was founded in 1923 and is situated in the middle of the Kent countryside just outside the village of Benenden.

Benenden prides itself on offering ‘A Complete Education’ and offers many Benenden-specific brands such as ‘Benenden Boarding’ and a ‘Benenden Diploma’ for the pre-GCSE year groups. It also offers an increasing number of scholarships and bursaries, particularly for girls from the local Kent community. It has regular open days and prospective parents are encouraged to visit at any stage (and as many times as they like) to meet staff and tour the impressive grounds.

Below you will find an admissions guide to Benenden School and a link to Owl tutors with specific Benenden experience who can support your daughter during the admissions process.

Preview weekend at Benenden

Following the completion of a registration form and payment of the registration fee (which Benenden recommend you do two years before the proposed entry date (so when your daughter is in Year 5), one year before joining, in the Autumn of Year 6, your daughter will be invited to a preview weekend. This is undertaken prior to ISEB and scholarship exams but will include both an English and Maths assessment and an informal interview with a member of school staff. It also allows your daughter to experience school and boarding life and involves an overnight stay in one of the boarding houses. It is possible to be awarded an academic scholarship at Benenden purely on the basis of performance at preview weekend, so it is worth preparing specifically for this. Benenden will also request a reference from your daughter's current school at this stage, which will include the results of any recent CAT tests.

ISEB Assessments

Benenden use the ISEB (Independent Schools Examination Board) assessments in the Autumn Term of Year 6. Following the preview weekend, girls will sit these exams at their own school or at a recognised test centre (international applicants can sit them at a recognised test centre in their country) and the results will be sent straight to Benenden.

Offers of a place will be then made by the end of December of Year 6.

Music and Sport Scholarships

At 11+, there are Academic, Music and Sport scholarships available. These are extended at 13+ to include Drama, Art, Design and Technology and All-Rounder awards (these are not available at 11+). Scholarship awards do not carry any financial award (so there is no automatic discount on fees) but will carry a certain level of prestige and give access to free music lessons for music scholars and free tennis lessons for sports scholars (assuming they are both interested and proficient in tennis). The deadline for application for both Music and Sports scholarships is the December of Year 6 for Year 7 entry at 11+, and assessments take place in the January following this.

Bursaries at Benenden

Unlike some schools, Benenden does not require your daughter to hold a scholarship to have access to bursarial support. Bursary application forms need to be submitted early, by the September of Year 6 and before the preview weekend or ISEB assessments.

There are three different types of bursaries at 11+, one of which (a 100% bursary) is only open to girls who attend a very specific list of local state primary schools, all located within a 7.5 mile radius of Benenden School and one of which (a 10% bursary) is open to children of diplomats or servicemen and women only.

The third bursary, the 'Benenden Bursary', is open to all applicants and is subject to means-testing.

Gil is an extremely organised and engaging tutor who makes maths learning fun. My son always enjoys his sessions with Gil.
Amy was an amazing tutor to my two boys while we were based in London. I have just received feedback from my son’s school teacher that the work Amy taught him while we were away had extended him beyond the curriculum and she was super impressed with what he had learned! Lovely person, we are thankful to her. Highly recommend.
My daughter was very close to her Science GCSEs and had asked us to arrange a couple of months tuition for her to increase her confidence and help her to increase her grades by a point or two. I was delighted and relieved by how quickly I was put in touch with John and how quickly we were able to schedule sessions. I shared her mock papers with him and he was able to pinpoint where to target his sessions providing her with relevant practice questions in the interim. She came out of Chemistry saying it was the best exam of her life ! Thanks John for delivering exactly what we needed. Will not hesitate to reach out to Owl in the future.
Joseph’s confidence has grown exponentially thanks to Julian’s help.
Nicola is an excellent tutor! Every lesson is well prepared and delivered to the high standards. Not a single minute is wasted. Our son's results and confidence in English improved within a very short time of tutoring with Nicola. She is the G.O.A.T (in our son's best football comments)
