If you are a UK-qualified teacher, you may be wondering how to access a digital version of your Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) certificate. The good news is that it is a relatively simple process, and can be done online.

First, you will need to go to the Teacher Self-Service Portal which can be found on the Teaching Regulation Agency website. In order to log in to the Teacher Self-Service Portal you will require the following information:

  1. Teacher Reference Number (see below if you do not have this)
  2. Surname
  3. Forename
  4. Date of birth

If you are able to provide this information you will be able to log into your account on the portal and download a digital copy of the QTS certificate by selecting the option “Request a QTS certificate” on the sidebar of the main page.

How do I find my Teacher Reference Number (TRN)?

If you are not in possession of your Teacher Reference Number, you can request for this to be sent to an email address that you will nominate. Select the option for “Find a lost teacher reference number (TRN)” from the Teacher Self-Service Portal login page where you will then be asked if you think that you have a TRN (click yes) and you will then have to submit an email address for the TRN to be sent to before being asked for the following information:

  1. First Name
  2. Last Name
  3. Have you ever changed your name?
  4. Date of birth
  5. Do you have a national insurance number?
  6. What is your national insurance number?

If you are able to provide this information and this matches with the information stored in the Gov.uk database, your TRN will be emailed to you. Once in possession of the TRN you can then use this to log into the Teacher Self-Service Portal following the instructions above.

How do I find out my National Insurance Number?

In the United Kingdom, you can find your National Insurance number by contacting the National Insurance Registration Helpline. You can also find it on official documents such as payslips, P60s, or letters from the Department for Work and Pensions or HM Revenue and Customs. If you’re still unable to locate your National Insurance number, you can request a replacement by contacting the Department for Work and Pensions or HM Revenue and Customs.

The National Insurance Registration Helpline is a phone service provided by the UK government for individuals who need assistance with finding their National Insurance number. The contact number for the National Insurance Registration Helpline is +44 (0) 191 203 7010

It is available Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 5:00 pm, and closed on weekends and UK bank holidays.
