Sue's biography

Sue is a highly qualified primary school teacher with over 12 years of experience working in schools and a successful track record of supporting pupils with entrance exam preparation (7+, 9+,11+, SET test, SATS and more). She has a wealth of strategies that promote accelerated progress and is deeply committed to her students' success. Warm and patient, Sue tailors the learning to meet pupils’ individual needs, empowering them to develop confidence as they learn. She has successfully supported children with entrance to Dulwich College (7+, 9+ and 11+), Alleyn's, Whitgift, Sutton Grammar School and Wallington County Grammar School. She offers in-person tuition (south east London) as well as online lessons. In addition to being a class teacher, over the years Sue has led a variety of booster groups at school - phonics, maths, reading - which have enabled students to overcome barriers to learning and make accelerated progress.

Sue obtained a BA degree in English Literature and she has a particular passion for teaching reading and writing. In English, she uses a variety of rich, engaging texts to give children a real purpose to their writing. Sue is deeply interested in developing the breadth and depth of children's vocabulary and she is skilled at teaching pupils to construct ambitious sentence structures that engage the reader. In maths, Sue uses the Singapore maths method - in addition to the NCETM and White Rose schemes - to support and challenge pupils, enabling them to deepen their conceptual understanding of complex topics. For younger pupils, Sue enjoys using concrete resources and visuals to bring the learning to life - for example, using Lego pieces to teach fractions.

Sue obtained a ‘distinction’ in her PGCE (Sheffield Hallam) and was awarded ‘outstanding’ teacher status by her training provider (LETTA). She enjoys working with students of all abilities and has experience teaching children with SEND (autism, dyspraxia and dyslexia) and EAL.

School entrance experience

Sue has worked with children aiming to attend the following schools:

Sue has helped a range of pupils successfully gain entrance into independent schools, including Dulwich College. She has experience tutoring pupils of different ages for a variety of entry points, including the 7+, 9+ and 11+. Sue makes the most of each session by systematically analysing pupils' strengths and misconceptions, tailoring the teaching to meet their individual needs in order to promote accelerated progress. She creates a plan of action and gives clear feedback, enabling students to develop confidence when working towards their next steps. In maths, Sue uses the Singapore method of teaching maths to help students attain mastery, using concrete and pictorial resources which enable pupils to develop fluency and problem solving skills. As an English graduate, Sue has a particular love of teaching reading and creative writing. She has a proven track record of improving pupils' comprehension skills - clarifying, retrieval, summarising, deduction and inference - and has a passion for vocabulary development. Sue enjoys teaching creative writing, using a text-based approach as a springboard for undertaking different genres of writing: narratives, diary entries, letters, poetry, persuasive brochures, non-chronological reports and newspaper articles. For students working towards entrance tests, Sue carefully and sensitively assesses students, honing in on test technique as well as teaching the content that will enable a child to flourish.
