Simon's biography

Simon is a graduate of Emmanuel College, University of Cambridge and completed his Master's degree at Royal Holloway, University of London. After a period as a researcher and university lecturer, he decided to switch careers into school teaching, qualifying through the Graduate Teacher Programme in 2003.

With over 15 years' teaching experience, Simon has worked in both the state sector and several of the country's leading independent schools, including St. Mary's School, Ascot and Lord Wandsworth College. He has taught mathematics at every level from Key Stage 2 to A Level Further Mathematics and IB, as well as coaching students applying for Oxbridge entry via Pre-U and STEP papers, guidance in interview technique and provision of 'mock' interviews.

Simon is also a highly experienced private tutor, both in person and online, helping prepare children for entrance/scholarship examinations to independent schools and public examinations at 16 and 18, as well as adults sitting professional examinations in fields as diverse as accountancy and nursing. In the course of his career he has received many testimonial letters and emails from students, expressing appreciation for the manner in which his support and encouragement has contributed to their success.

IB Experience

At Charters School, Simon prepared the detailed mathematics section of the school's ultimately successful bid to offer the IB to its Sixth Form students and, as a private tutor, he has assisted students preparing for both Standard and Higher Level papers.

School entrance experience

Simon has worked with children aiming to attend the following schools:

At both Lord Wandsworth College and St. Mary's School, Ascot, Simon prepared the entrance examination papers for pupils applying for entry at 11 and 13, based on the syllabus and format of the equivalent ISEB papers and, as second in department, advised parents on preparing their children for the paper. Since then he has privately tutored children preparing for entrance papers for a variety of grammar and independent schools at ages 11, 13 and 16.

Owl Tutors school entrance training

Simon has successfully completed the Owl Tutors training course in 11 Plus exam preparation. This means they have a thorough understanding of the structure, content and demands of these exams and are qualified to prepare students. Training is delivered by Holly, a highly experienced school entrance tutor and member of the Owl Tutors team.
