We are always thinking of new ways to secure the best tuition engagements for our tutors. Publishing new content on our website is a hugely important way of upping website traffic and attracting potential clients. We want our tutors to play a part in this process by contributing blogs. Here are some tips on how to write effective blogs.

Identify your key points first:

As tutors you will be under pressure to fit content generation into a busy schedule and therefore to be able to generate content efficiently will be important. One of the easiest ways to generate a blog post is to start with the points that you have to make and then add detail to each point. For example, if your title was something like ‘how do I get a level 7 in IB Maths?’, start by making a list of 8 bullet points answering this question. After you have identified your key points you can then add around 100 words for each which is much easier than writing 800 words off the cuff!

Think about your audience:

The primary aim for encouraging tutors to generate content for us is to build their profiles and brand on our website so that we can attract more, better paid tuition work for them. In order to achieve this it is important that your posts relate to the tuition that you perform and that they focus on areas that are likely to help place you into more jobs. Think about what your existing students have difficulty with and focus on generating content that will assist them and therefore validate you as the right person to talk to about tuition.

Old news is no longer news:

Making content current can greatly increase its chances of being found and read. Where possible, it will help to relate the topic of your content to news and current affairs. Although this may also have the unintended consequence of your content dating and therefore being less relevant in the future, you will have the opportunity to add subsequent content with the same themes but related to current affairs of the time at a later date.

Get shorty:

Less is sometimes more. Although some topics require lots of detail – and rightly so – for most articles 600-800 words should be enough to get your point across.

Think international:

We are increasingly working towards selling your services all over the globe. If you focus your attention on say the UK curriculum, you can expect US citizens to ignore your advice even if it is relevant! In order to target the widest audience possible it will help to relate your topic to international events and refrain for referring to the events of any one country.

Don’t copy:

Copying will be at best unethical and at worst against the laws of certain jurisdictions. Besides these two highly unpalatable points, the reason we are asking our tutors to generate content is to help our search engine optimisation. Search engines can recognise copied content and are likely to penalise websites for publishing it. If you are going to plagiarise you may as well not perform any content generation at all. If you are referring to third party content please do reference this correctly and inform us if you have done so.

Be visual:

People engage with visual content as it is often easier to interpret. If you have diagrams, graphs and pictures that you can add, please do forward them to us. Please remember the point about copying though. Most images that you find on the internet will be subject to copyright. If you are going to provide visual images please make sure that they are not subject to copyright. Owl Tutors are working on building our own library of visual content and so please speak to us if you would like to use visual media but are unsure of how to source it.

Add controversy palatably:

If students and clients engage with your content by either posting comments or sharing your articles, this will help generate more leads from each article. Feel free to add some controversy but please keep in mind that our editor will not tolerate anything unethical!

Ask an Owl:

If you need help or guidance about what to write please feel free to get in touch with one of us.

Happy content generation!
