Brighton College School Entrance Guide

Alan is a fantastic tutor. His lessons are engaging, well thought through and always relevant. He explains concepts in a way that makes sense, he has been a great sounding board when trying to understand complex topics and his teaching is always relevant. Highly recommend and will use again.

Situated on the south coast with excellent rail links to London, Brighton College is a popular choice for both local day pupils and UK/ international boarders. Boarding is offered from 13+ (Year 9) although boarding places are available from Year 7 at one of the family schools, Handcross Park. Brighton College has an ambitious building and refurbishment programme and is well-known for its focus on spacious and forward-thinking facilities for its pupils. The school has soared in popularity over the last few years; now boasting the accolade of ‘United Kingdom School of the Decade’ it’s not hard to see why so many young people want to be educated beside the seaside. Unlike many top-ranking schools, Brighton is a co-educational school and stakes claim to a cultivating culture of kindness in its corridors. What’s more, a recent cash injection pumped millions into their science department and has propelled Brighton to STEM glory- and have recently been crowned the ‘top school for STEM’ in the UK’.Below you can find information about 11+, 13+ and 16+ entry to Brighton College, alongside tutors who can help if you are considering admission for your child at any stage.

Pupils wishing to attain a place in Year 7 (11+ route) will be invited to sit a series of academic tests in Maths, English, Verbal, and Non-verbal Reasoning in December of Year 6. Following on from this in January, pupils will be invited to take part in an interview and activities day (this typically consists of further academic activities to assess the pupils’ suitability for the school). Offers are sent out by the end of January.

13+ Entry to Brighton College

Pupils applying for a place in Year 9 (13+ route), have a slightly different process. 13+ pupils will sit the ISEB- Pre-Test at their current school in Year 6. If successful, further assessments and interviews (an ‘orientation day’) take place in the following February with offers made in March.

16+ Entry to Brighton College

16+ entry to Brighton College is a two stage process. The first stage (held in November of Year 11) is an assessment day, where pupils are examined in verbal reasoning and maths alongside a general paper. The second stage is an interview which takes place the week after the assessments. Offers are normally made as conditional until the results of GCSE exams are known.

Scholarships are available at Brighton College, and 11+ candidates are assessed for an academic scholarship during the normal entry process, meaning offers of scholarships are sent out promptly following this. There are also scholarships available at 13+ in chess, dance, design and technology and music.

What parents and students say about our tutoring for Brighton College

My son only had a few sessions with Ricky prior to entrance exams to build his confidence, but he responded really well to him as a tutor. The little boost was all he needed to plug some gaps and consequently he went on to be offered a Headmasters award at one school and an offer for Brighton which we are all thrilled about.

We only used Richard for a few last minute sessions but he quickly built up a rapport with our son and they had some productive and (importantly) very calm sessions and provided helpful feedback.
