We believe that qualified teachers are uniquely positioned to provide outstanding tuition. However, we also recognise that not all qualified teachers excel in their craft. That’s why all of our tutors are not only certified educators but have also successfully passed our rigorous assessment process, proving they are truly exceptional teachers!

They are all experienced qualified teachers.
Many of our school entrance tutors have significant experience and track records in preparing students for competitive school entrance exams

They have achieved academic excellence themselves
Many of our tutors have achieved other relevant skills such as qualifications to assist students with special educational needs
How can I save money when using an Owl Tutor
Consider online tuition if you have not already done so. Most students at KS2 or above will have no problem engaging just as efficiently with an online tutor than a face to face one. Face to face tuition can be up to 50% more expensive for the same tutor!
Consider shorter sessions. Most tuition sessions are one hour. 40 minute sessions can often be effective and could reduce your fees by 33%.
Find out if there are times that you can offer to your tutor that are more convenient for them. Most tutors find it difficult to fill their hours during the day (9am to 3pm) in the week. Many of them will accept lower rates at these times.
How do our fees work?
Our tutors set the rates that they wish to be paid on each job. The rate that they will request will be dependent on a number of factors including:
The rate they wish to earn per hour
Whether the job is face to face or online
How much preparation time is required for each session
The tutor's remaining availability
Darren's biography
Darren studied honours Mathematics at the University of Waterloo in Canada and earned a bachelor's degree after 4 years. He then went on and achieved his bachelor of education from Brock University. He has been teaching high school mathematics for the last 17 years including the IB curriculum.
Darren promotes learning and understanding in his tutoring sessions rather than memorization as this will lead to long-term success. He not only wants to help improve students' level of comprehension in Mathematics but puts a strong emphasis on increasing the level of confidence students have in the subject area. A typical tutoring session with Darren will involve the student to be very interactive online and they should not expect just a repetition of concepts that were taught in the classroom.
Tailoring lessons to students' interests, having them see how Mathematics can be applied in the real-world and having students enjoy the learning process are some of Darren's goals during each session. As an IB examiner, Darren has incorporated the thousands of past student solutions he has witnessed on examinations into his tutoring sessions to help students avoid common errors and missteps.
Darren also provides homework assignments after each tutoring session as he believes the number one way to achieve better and more consistent results in any subject area is to practice, like riding a bicycle! It is also a great way to begin each session by reviewing the previous homework and ensuring the student has grasped the concepts before moving forward. In my spare time, I do enjoy numerous sporting activities as well as cooking.
IB Experience
Darren has been teaching and tutoring high school students for the last 17 years. He has specifically been teaching the IB curriculum for the last ten. He is also trained in the newest IB curriculum course, analysis and approaches. More recently, Darren has become and IB examiner for the last four years. Darren has experience tutoring over one-hundred students in both the analysis and approaches (AA) and applications and interpretations (AI) courses. While working with these students, Darren has become an expert on many of the different graphing calculators students use in IB, which is an extremely important skill that numerous students could benefit from.
