Matthew's biography

Matthew achieved a first class honours degree in Mathematics and Theology at the University of Exeter, before fulfilling his ambition of becoming a teacher, by completing a PGCE in primary teaching with modern languages at the same university. He worked at boarding schools in South India and Wiltshire, teaching mathematics to GCSE and key stage 3, as well as teaching English as a foreign language during the holidays, before moving to a prep school in West London where he taught for 5 years, becoming the Head of Key Stage 2 Science. As a Year 6 teacher, he specialised in preparing children to take 11+ exams, and was able to get children into excellent schools, such as St Paul's boys and girls schools, Westminster Under, King's Wimbledon, Latymer, and Eton to name just a few. He now teaches in the Junior section of a British boarding school in India, taking a Year 5 and 6 class. Other than teaching, Matthew has a lifelong love of learning and enjoys participating in music groups, and playing tennis and cricket.

Matthew believes that although the exam process can be gruelling, it also provides a wonderful opportunity for teachers, children and parents to work together to create a positive, productive and growing environment, where everyone can be challenged and succeed! Having seen 4 years of Year 6 children through their exams, he believes that exams are a springboard, not just into the child's next school, but also into a thriving life of learning.

Matthew worked at a prep school in Chiswick for nearly 5 years, and for 3 years in Year 6 preparing children for online and paper entrance exams, including the online ISEB pre-tests, which were particularly prevalent during 2020. He also has experience preparing the girls for the traditional consortium style exams, and the boys for schools such as Hampton, Latymer and St Paul's to name a few. He was Head of Department for KS2 science, and oversaw the 11+ science exams (for boarding schools) in Form 6. He now works in a boarding school in South India where he also teaches Year 6, and works as a part time tutor online.
