7 Plus Spelling 11

Explanation: The y is changed to i before –ed, –er and –est are added, but not before – ing as this would result in ii. The only ordinary words with ii are skiing and taxiing.

Teaching Ideas: -Discuss the rule with your child and give them a number of examples to practise with. - Dictate a sentence which contains words with this rule and ask your child to write it down. E.g. ‘I was happy, Fred was happier and the dog was happiest.’ Repeat the rule to them as they write.
