Nicola is a qualified and highly experienced English teacher specialising in preparation for competitive 11+, 13+ and 16+ entrance examinations. She has successfully supported candidates applying to many of the United Kingdom’s leading independent schools, including St Paul’s, Sevenoaks, King’s College School Wimbledon, Wellington College, Charterhouse and The Perse School. Nicola holds a First Class degree in English, for which she received the School of English award for the best final year performance, and a Master’s degree with Distinction, completed with prestigious AHRC research funding. She has taught English at Key Stages 3, 4 and 5 in leading independent and grammar schools.
Alongside her entrance examination work, Nicola holds a senior position in national English assessment. She is currently a Senior Leader for English GCSE marking, managing team leaders from across the country. This role gives her a detailed understanding of how written responses are assessed and, crucially, what distinguishes a strong response from an exceptional one. Her students’ results reflect this expertise: in 2026, students achieved exceptional outcomes across AQA GCSE, Edexcel International GCSE and Cambridge IGCSE English, with several securing grade 9s in English Language and English Literature. Most notably, one student achieved the maximum possible mark in both AQA GCSE English Language and AQA GCSE English Literature.
Nicola’s entrance preparation is highly individualised and school-specific. Rather than teaching from a generic 11+ or 13+ programme, she designs preparation around the precise format, timing, level and assessment expectations of each target school, alongside the individual student’s strengths and areas for development. She creates original, school-specific resources modelled closely on target assessments, including bespoke comprehension papers, mark schemes, model answers, vocabulary work and structured creative writing tasks. Marked work is used diagnostically to identify precisely what is limiting a student’s performance, allowing subsequent lessons and resources to respond directly to their progress.
Nicola has achieved particular success in preparing students for Sevenoaks. While working for Owl Tutors, she taught a student who had previously been unsuccessful in the 11+. Following carefully targeted English preparation, he secured a place at Sevenoaks through the Year 9 entrance assessments and performed strongly enough to be invited to participate in the Academic Scholarship examinations. English had previously been his weaker subject, making this progress particularly significant. Nicola also prepared him for the group discussion component of the assessment.
Nicola has also developed specialist knowledge of the revised 13+ English assessment for The Perse School. She successfully prepared a student for the new format, including creative writing from an image. The student secured places at The Perse School and another selective school. Her parents described Nicola’s support as “instrumental” and praised her ability to motivate their daughter “to give her best self”. Following the entrance examinations, Nicola was asked to continue teaching her.
For 16+ candidates, Nicola draws upon her extensive GCSE and IGCSE teaching and assessment expertise to develop the sophisticated analytical and written skills expected by highly selective schools: perceptive interpretation, precise analysis of language and structure, mature argument and controlled, original written expression.
