Why do our tutors cost what they do?
They are all experienced qualified teachers.
Many of our school entrance tutors have significant experience and track records in preparing students for competitive school entrance exams
Many of our tutors are also examiners
They have achieved academic excellence themselves
Many of our tutors have achieved other relevant skills such as qualifications to assist students with special educational needs
How can I save money when using an Owl Tutor
Consider online tuition if you have not already done so. Most students at KS2 or above will have no problem engaging just as efficiently with an online tutor than a face to face one. Face to face tuition can be up to 50% more expensive for the same tutor!
Consider shorter sessions. Most tuition sessions are one hour. 40 minute sessions can often be effective and could reduce your fees by 33%.
Find out if there are times that you can offer to your tutor that are more convenient for them. Most tutors find it difficult to fill their hours during the day (9am to 3pm) in the week. Many of them will accept lower rates at these times.
How do our fees work?
Our tutors set the rates that they wish to be paid on each job. The rate that they will request will be dependent on a number of factors including:
The rate they wish to earn per hour
Whether the job is face to face or online
How much preparation time is required for each session
The tutor's remaining availability
Rachel has been my 5 year old daughter’s tutor for almost half a year. She is a wonderful teacher, kind, friendly, professional and very experienced with young children. We have our classes online and she engages my daughter very well and keeps the content of the class stimulating and fun. I am delighted that my daughter has made great progress in her phonics and reading.

Rachel's biography
Rachel has worked in Primary Education for over 20 years and is now a full-time, professional tutor, specialising in 7 Plus preparation. She has been with Owl Tutors since 2015 and her wealth of teaching and tutoring experience is evident in the progress her students make and consistent good results: those she supported for the 2022/2023 school entrance exam cycle had a 100% success rate.
Rachel previously taught as a Year 1 Teacher at Northbridge House Pre Prep in Hampstead for 10 years. She has a thorough understanding of the most competitive schools in and around North London (and beyond), and is happy to advise parents on suitable school options for their children. She has successfully prepared students for entry to a variety of top London schools including Highgate School, North London Collegiate, St Pauls and University College School.
She has been working as a private tutor for most of her career and relishes the opportunity to work with children on a one to one basis. She builds a fantastic rapport with both children and parents and understands fully the demands and pressures on families during this time. She is there to fully prepare and help ease the journey through entrance exams or home schooling.
Rachel is able to differentiate lessons to pitch learning objectives at the perfect level for your child. Her lessons are fun, memorable and she is consistently able to extend prior knowledge and build children's confidence across all areas of the curriculum.
Her drama background makes her a suitable candidate for hot seating and developing interview skills so that children can confidently communicate their knowledge and attributes to others.
Her creative background has given her an edge when developing pupils' imaginative and creative writing skills. She uses a range of tools to enable every child to become a great storyteller! She has quickly adapted to teaching online and finds it easy to engage pupils with very positive results. While she finds online tutoring to be a really effective method of teaching (via Zoom), she is usually able to accommodate arranging an initial face-to-face session at her home.
She has worked with many EAL pupils and spent a year working at a top Private School in Madrid teaching English to native Spanish speakers. She extended this knowledge by working at Stewart International Bilingual School (Le Petite Ecole) as a Year 1 English Teacher. During her three years there she also ran extra curricular English Classes helping children from Year 1 to Year 6 develop and improve their English vocabulary.
She has a wealth of experience with both special needs children and those who find learning more challenging and prides herself on building confidence and enabling them to access the curriculum with more ease.
Rachel also runs her own 7+ Mock exams enabling children the perfect opportunity to practice the skills they have learnt and be fully prepared for exam day. She is able to set targets and focus areas so that parents have a really clear idea of how their child can work towards and achieve their goals.
She loves to travel and has volunteered at several schools around the world including Brazil, Laos and Cambodia.
In her spare time Rachel loves the great outdoors and can be found swimming in lakes, kayaking and hiking or doing a spot of outdoor yoga.

School entrance experience
Rachel has worked with children aiming to attend the following schools:
I have helped children to secure places for the 7+ at Highgate, South Hampstead, The Hall, Westminster, St Paul's, UCS, Channing, Habs and St Anthony's with 100% success rates for several years.
I also run my own 7+ Mock Exams in the Autumn term to help prepare children for exam day and give them realistic targets to work towards to give them the best chance at success. The mock exams have been really successful, particularly in giving children a better idea of time management, interview practice and to show them what is expected in the papers in order to achieve a high score.
Rachel's qualifications
Rachel qualified to teach Primary education in 2002, and holds a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) from University of the West of England.
Rachel makes preparation really clear and simple and gives my daughter the space to think and own her work. Her experience really shows in how quickly she understands my child‘s existing knowledge and way of learning She is full of positive encouragement and helps my daughter gain clarity on the best techniques. I feel we have a clear path to being ready for 7+ tests when the time comes
