Phil's biography

Phil studied Environmental Science at the University of Southampton before going on to do his PGCE at the University of Birmingham. He began his teaching career in 2002, teaching in some of the top schools (in both the private and state sectors and also internationally). His last post (of 6 years) was teaching science and maths to Common Entrance 13+ at Westminster Cathedral Choir Prep School in London where pupils consistently achieved excellent results enabling them to go on to some of the leading schools in the country. Indeed in every inspection he has been through (be it OFSTED or ISI) his teaching has always been classed as outstanding.

He has also been tutoring in both maths and science, reasoning and english since 2010 with many of his students wanting help to get through their senior schools entrance examinations (Common Entrance, City of London, Dulwich, Winchester). Since 2018, he has successfully tutored both Maths and Science up to GCSE to many different students (from those needing to 'pass' and those wishing to ensure grade 9s are achieved). He knows the pressures his students face and, in a calm and patient manner, aims to instil confidence and enthusiasm. Having a sound knowledge of the syllabi, knowing the tricks of the trade and having amassed a large e-resource bank, he is in a very strong position to get the very best out of all his students, ensuring they have a sound understanding of the subject matter and are well prepared for any examinations.

He believes strongly that the tutoring process is very much a two way process; the tutor learns who the student is, adjusting the teaching and challenge so the learning is effective and efficient thus leading to the student being actively engaged in the entire learning process. As such Phil prides himself on the strong rapports he builds with his students.

School entrance experience

Phil has worked with children aiming to attend the following schools:

In the last 4 years I have helped two students to gain scholarships to St Mary's Ascot. Previous to that another student obtained a scholarship place to Forest School. I have also worked in the last few years with students aiming for scholarships (13+) to St Paul's, King's Canterbury and Radley College. One place was awarded to Radley and the others, unfortunately, narrowly missed out. Over the years, every student I have worked with aiming for Winchester has gained a place there (around 12 students).

Recent testimonials

Phil was excellent. He was able to explain complex concepts in Physics and Maths in a way my son could understand. My son looked forward to the lessons. We owe a large part of my son's success in securing an academic scholarship to Phil.
