What do A-Level league tables really mean?

A level league tables can be incredibly useful for those prospective students and parents who are interested in how schools perform academically in comparison to others. The league tables rank schools based on their A level grades and are a useful part of a parent’s toolkit. However, it is also important to think about the contextual information behind the numbers. This could include information about the local area, the background of the families who choose the school, and the ‘value-added’ element. If pupils are making huge progress between starting school and finishing their A-Levels, the school is doing something right.

How to choose the right Sixth Form at A-Level?

Whilst league tables are important, there are other aspects to consider. Does the school teach a wide variety of A-Level subjects, including those you are interested in? Is there pastoral support in place for sixth formers, who often have quite complicated lives? Try to visit the school or sixth form and see what you think about the atmosphere. Does it seem friendly and supportive? These students should be being prepared for the world of work or higher education – do they seem ready?

What is the difference between a school-based Sixth Form and a Sixth Form college?

There are a few aspects to consider when choosing between a sixth form based at a school and one based at a college. College-based sixth forms tend to be more informal and do not have a uniform (although they may still have a dress code) whereas school-based sixth forms are still run along more formal lines, often requiring students to stay in school for most of the day, and wear smart attire. There will be differing levels of support available, as schools are generally catering for students from age 11, so extensive pastoral and wellbeing systems will be in place. Conversely, sixth form colleges may have pastoral systems specifically geared towards older teens.

How many A-Levels should I study?

Most students choose to study three A-Levels, with some choosing two or four. These can also be balanced with other qualifications such as EPQs or GCSE resits. One of the most important aspects of sixth form study is to keep in regular contact with your teachers or tutors so that they can help you decide if you have taken on too much or need further challenge to achieve your goals.
