At what age or year does a child write a 13+ exam. Is it written by a 12 year old child just starting high school year 8 in September or is it for a 13 year old child starting year 9 in September if the exam is written in either September or October for an entrance in the following year.

Good question!
13+ exams are set by schools to determine who can enter the school in Year 9. Some schools have a single set of exams in Year 8, whereas some schools use 'pre-testing', which they use in Year 6 or Year 7 to determine who can sit the Common Entrance papers in Year 8.
