Nick

Nick has worked for 30 years as an education professional both within the independent and the state sectors as a class teacher. He has built a career which has always encouraged students to think, to question and to strive to become the best of themselves. At the heart of his teaching and tutoring philosophy is a nurturing, child-centred environment with high expectations and a desire for every student to be equipped with the skills and knowledge that they need for the future. Nick spent 22 years working in independent schools in London and the South East. He worked at a prep school Sidcup where he prepared pupils for the Bexley and Kent 11+ exams. At a prep school in Kingston-on-Thames he taught across the curriculum, helping to prepare pupils for 11+ entry to Hampton School, Reeds, Kingston Grammar and Tiffin School.

Nick became a Head of Humanities at a 13+ preparatory school on the Surrey/Sussex border. For 16 years, he led the History, Geography and RS departments and taught 13+ Common Entrance Scholarship. He supported Year 8 students to gain scholarships at Brighton College, Lancing College, Hurst, Seaford College, Cranleigh, RGS Guildford, as well as Charterhouse and Harrow. During this time he worked as a Team Inspector for the Independent Schools' Inspectorate.

Nick spent 6 years working in the state sector and has an excellent knowledge of the primary curriculum and the core competencies at KS2 in English and Maths. He has a real passion for English and really enjoys developing pupils to become confident writers.

As a tutor, Nick sets high expectations for pupil learning behaviours and attitudes by encouraging each student to realise the potential that lies within them. He builds a growth mindset culture by teaching children to accept challenge as an opportunity and a step to success. His students are introduced to the power of ‘yet’, where they better understand that mistakes that are just steps on the way to success.
